๐โกInterconnection: exporting energy is no fantasy; itโs in our future! As Nevis forges ahead with its flagship 30-megawatt power plant project, one question remains: what to do with all that excess power? Why not send it to the sister isle, St Kitts? Ok, how? The solution: the SKNICE project - an undersea cable to boost energy independence and resilience - with support from the Caribbean Development Bank. ๐ Interconnecting Saint Kitts and Nevis ๐ Transmitting 30 MW of geothermal power ๐ Creating a smart, resilient energy grid Why undersea cables? These high-capacity transmission lines can: - Connect islands seamlessly ๐๏ธ - Withstand harsh marine environments ๐ - Enable renewable energy sharing ๐ - Support grid stability and reliability ๐ช What is SKNICE? ๐ค It's the Saint Kitts and Nevis Island Climate Enhancement Project, transforming the nation's energy landscape. By developing geothermal resources, installing undersea cables, and creating a smart grid, the project aims to reduce 99% electricity dependence on imported fossil fuels and generate up to 30 megawatts of clean, sustainable power. This points the way for other OECS Member States to find new markets for their renewable energy projects, particularly geothermal power. Key highlights: - 30 MW geothermal power plant in Nevis; production drilling to start in 2026 ๐ - Undersea cables connecting the two islands โก - Battery storage for grid stability ๐ฌ The SKNICE project aims to revolutionise energy with its four powerful Ds: ๐ฟ Decarbonise: Shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy - ๐๏ธ Decentralise Empowering local energy generation ๐ค Democratise:Turning consumers into pro-consumers ๐ป Digitalise: Smart grid with real-time management Small islands, BIG vision! ๐๏ธ #OECSsustainableenergy #OECSgeobuild
