At NYC Emergency Management, we carry each day the memory of those who gave everything for this nation. Lives cut short. Futures laid down. Sacrifices made so others might live in safety and freedom. We honor those still standing in harmโs way, and we stand beside the families who carry the weight of service every single day, often quietly and without recognition. Last year, Commissioner Zach Iscol, a Marine veteran, reflected in the Daily News on what Memorial Day truly asks of us: to honor not just the fallen, but the bonds that unite us. The trust built in hardship. The ability to see the world through each otherโs eyes. bit.ly/3FyLL2S In our own work, we carry that spirit forward. Every shift we take and every life we protect is possible only because others gave everything they had. Their memory lights our path forward. Their example shapes our service. Today, and every day, we remember. We honor. We will not forget.

Commissioner Zach Iscol has been briefed on the horrific attack at the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. While there is no known nexus to New York City at this time, NYC Emergency Management coordinates closely with NYPD and local, state, and federal partners to monitor for any potential impacts. Out of an abundance of caution, New Yorkers should expect an increased public safety presence at religious sites and cultural institutions. NYCEM continues to support citywide preparedness and maintain situational awareness. Staying informed is important. The USS New York was commissioned on November 7, 2009, in New York City, built with a bow forged from 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel. Wherever it sails, it carries the name, history, and spirit of New York. Its motto, โStrength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.โ, reflects a mission of vigilance, coordination, and protection, embodied daily, even in the chaplainโs prayer every day that honors the name of someone whose life was taken on 9/11. We were honored to receive a tour yesterday, on Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember those who gave their lives in service. We thank the captain and crew for their exceptional welcome and for reminding us that the work of safeguarding others is a constant duty, upheld with discipline and care on land and at sea.
