*Eight Years of Purposeful Policy Leadership* As The Dialogue marks 8 years, we celebrate a journey dedicated to shaping technology policy that is inclusive, forward-looking, and rooted in public interest. From advancing ethical AI through the *Coalition for Responsible Evolution of AI (CoRE-AI)* , to building safer digital ecosystems via the *Alliance for Cyber Trust and Safety (ACTS)* , and fostering global cooperation with the *Strategic Research, Innovation & Dialogue for EU–India Engagement (STRIDE-EUI)* — our work continues to bridge innovation and governance with clarity and conviction. Grateful to our partners, collaborators, and community who’ve walked this path with us. Here’s to dialogue that drives impact — _then, now, and ahead._
📰 *#MediaFeature #FairUseDebate* Is it 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝘂𝘀𝗲 or 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? The ongoing ANI vs YouTubers case has sparked an urgent conversation on the boundaries of copyright law in India. With creators using short clips for commentary and news analysis, where do we draw the line? In her remarks to 𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭, 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗮, 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲, explains that courts often evaluate fair use through a three-pronged lens: the quantum of content used, the purpose behind the usage, and whether it impacts the original creator’s market. If a clip is part of a longer video offering context, analysis, or critique — and doesn’t serve as a market substitute — it may qualify as fair use. She stresses that creative expression must be balanced with copyright protections. But as takedown threats and copyright strikes mount, a deeper legal question remains unanswered... 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: India’s digital transformation has empowered millions through public infrastructure like UPI and ONDC. Yet, underserved communities continue to face hurdles — from low digital literacy and infrastructure gaps to trust and affordability issues. Bridging these divides requires contextual, inclusive, and principle-driven policymaking. This conference will explore how to strengthen India’s digital public infrastructure, ensure trust in digital payments, and unlock access to financial tools for all citizens. 📰 _*#MediaFeature*_ The Indian government has amended 𝗔𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀, enabling private entities in sectors such as 𝗲-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲, and 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 to use Aadhaar for customer verification. While this initiative aims to enhance service delivery and ease of access, it has also prompted discussions on 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. Experts have raised concerns about the adequacy of safeguards for 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 and the potential implications for 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆, particularly in light of past judicial pronouncements on the matter. 📰 *#MediaFeature* India is actively shaping its AI regulatory framework, navigating the fine line between innovation and governance while avoiding overregulation. Various government bodies, including MeitY, RBI, NITI Aayog, and the Department of Commerce, are leading consultations on AI governance, competition, IP rights, and financial risks. Experts argue that a sectoral approach is the best path forward, preventing excessive restrictions while allowing AI to flourish. But with AI evolving faster than policies can keep up, a crucial question remains—will India’s approach be proactive enough to safeguard its digital future, or will regulatory uncertainty slow down progress? In conversation with 𝗛𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶 𝗟𝗼𝗵𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗯 (𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀), 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗿𝗮, 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲, pointed out AI’s dual impact on market competition, cautioning that while AI algorithms could enable collusion, they might also empower smaller players through innovation in supply chains and predictive analytics.
