*Local Solutions Key to Zimbabwe's Waste Management Woes* 2-8February 2025 *By Charles Hami* Local initiatives are being hailed as the key to sustainable waste management in Zimbabwe's urban areas. Councillors from Karoi and Chinhoyi have emphasized the importance of community-led solutions in addressing the country's waste management challenges. > Follow The BGG News on WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaZpsH71noz7ubzdaY2y Karoi Ward 9 Councillor, Muzondiwa Sawanje, highlighted the challenges faced by his municipality, including the lack of adequate refuse collection trucks. However, he noted that local initiatives, such as health promoters advocating for proper waste management at the household level, have shown promise in addressing these challenges. Similarly, Chinhoyi Ward 7 Councillor, Arnold Muronga, acknowledged the refuse collection challenges facing his municipality, but expressed enthusiasm for local initiatives proposed at the ward level. These initiatives include exchange programs to share knowledge on sustainable waste management practices. The Glen View 1 Clean-Up Campaign, a group of environmentalists from Glen View 1, has also been advocating for local initiatives in waste management and general environmental management. The group has been working with locals and has visited Budiriro's Material Recovery Centre (MRC), a pioneering initiative in waste recycling. Budiriro South MP, Hon. Darlington Chigumbu, pledged his support for local initiatives, emphasizing the need for collective action to address waste management challenges. Environmental expert, Mr. Kudakwashe Manomano, commended the MRC model, noting its potential for replication in other urban areas. Effective waste management requires a multi-faceted approach. Some key strategies include: - *Community Engagement*: Educating and involving the community in waste management practices - *Waste Reduction and Recycling*: Implementing initiatives to reduce waste generation and increase recycling rates - *Partnerships and Collaborations*: Fostering partnerships between local government, community groups, and private sector organizations to support waste management initiatives - *Infrastructure Development*: Investing in waste management infrastructure, such as recycling facilities and waste-to-energy plants By adopting these strategies and supporting local initiatives, Zimbabwe's urban areas can work towards a cleaner, healthier environment.

*Social Media Abuzz with Bizarre Court Ruling* 26January-31 January 2025 *By Charles Hami* A surprising story has taken social media by storm, with many users buzzing about a court ruling in Harare, Zimbabwe. A Magistrate Court has ordered a woman, Primrose Sithole, to pay a hefty fine of $100 to her boyfriend, Taurai Chidokwani, after she collected $2 in transport money from him but failed to show up for a sleepover. > Follow The BGG News on WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaZpsH71noz7ubzdaY2y The incident unfolded when Chidokwani sent Sithole the transport money, but she switched off her phone and didn't arrive as promised. Feeling deceived and emotionally distressed, Chidokwani reported the matter to the authorities, leading to Sithole's arrest and subsequent court appearance. During the trial, Chidokwani presented evidence, including mobile money transfer records and WhatsApp messages, to support his claim. In her ruling, Magistrate Cynthia Marare ordered Sithole to refund the $2, pay an additional $70 for breach of agreement, and another $33 as special damages for emotional distress. The court emphasized that the ruling aimed to deter others from similar behavior. Many social media users have expressed shock and amusement at the ruling, with some questioning the proportionality of the fine. Others have praised the court for taking a stand against deceptive behavior. As the story continues to spread online, it's clear that this unusual case has sparked a lively debate about relationships, trust, and the law.

*Breaking News* *Glen View South MP Hon. Grandmore Hakata Passes Away* 24January 2025 *By Charles Hami* Tributes are pouring in for Glen View South Member of Parliament, Hon. Grandmore Hakata, who passed away yesterday at the age of 56. According to his relative, Mr. Moses Hakata, the late MP had been admitted to Arundel Private Hospital on Sunday for treatment of a swollen left leg, high blood pressure, and diabetic complications. His leg was amputated on Tuesday, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his condition around 5 pm yesterday. > `Follow The BGG News on WhatsApp:` https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaZpsH71noz7ubzdaY2y As the nation mourns the loss of Hon. Hakata, his legacy as a champion of community development and participatory governance continues to inspire. Last month, Hon. Hakata and Shandira Glen View South's implementation of local development participatory initiative on complementing City of Harare's service provision and infrastructural development faced criticism from a City of Harare general hand employee and misguided elements. However, Hon. Hakata, his Personal Assistant, Vongai Nyahuwe and the entire Shandira Glen View South grouping persevered, demonstrating their commitment to community-led initiatives. In a poignant coincidence, The BGG News spoke to City of Harare's Town Clerk and Cllr Clemence Maimba yesterday, prior to Hon. Hakata's passing, to discuss the council's policy on collective involvement of residents in council services and infrastructural development. The Town Clerk, Eng. Mabhena Moyo emphasized the importance of community ownership, urging residents to take pride in their city's infrastructure. Cllr Maimba noted that local initiatives are welcome, particularly in light of the financial challenges faced by City of Harare and other local authorities. Hon. Hakata's passing has sent shockwaves throughout the community, with many paying tribute to his tireless efforts to promote participatory governance and community development. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire and motivate others to follow in his footsteps.

*Glen View 1 Home Industry: A Story of Resilience and Revival* 19-25January 2025 By Charles Hami Glen View 1 Home Industry, established in 1988, was once a thriving hub of entrepreneurial activity, with members exceling in various trades such as carpentry, upholstering, motor mechanics, welding, tailoring, panel beating and spray painting, car breaking and motor spares sales. However, the industry faced a major setback when it was demolished during the 2005 Murambatsvina Operation. Undeterred, the Home Industry's Committee members approached the City of Harare authorities for assistance, but their efforts were met with little success until 2014. That year, stalls were constructed, and public toilets were resuscitated, thanks to the help of donors mobilized by the then-local councillor, Tungamirai Madzokere, and city officials. Today, the Home Industry operates on half of its original area, with the remaining half lying idle due to insufficient funding. Despite this challenge, the interim management committee, comprised of Chairperson Mr. Muzvare Mabhugu, Vice Chairperson Mr. Ignatius Muza, and Secretary Mr. Regedzai Mundida, works tirelessly to improve the affairs of its members. The industry's revival is being greatly facilitated by the Glen View District Office, under the leadership of District Officer Mr. Mupingashato and his Deputy, Mrs. Mhike. Their team, in collaboration with the Markets Officer, Mrs. Katize, and her staff, are playing a crucial role in supporting the home industry's growth and development. The industry's strategic location, near Mataure Business Centre and surrounded by private home industries, makes it a one-stop hub for various businesses and community programs. These include churches, colleges, medical and maternity center, pharmacies, airtime and ecocash agents, catering, grocery shops and tuckshops, barbers and hairdressers, drinking spots, milling company, and various retail shops. As the Glen View 1 Home Industry continues to strive towards full operation and development, its story serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of its members, the community, and the supportive role of the Glen View District Office and its officials. > Follow The BGG News on WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaZpsH71noz7ubzdaY2y
