THE STUGGLES AND SORROWS OF AN AFRICAN GIRL CHILD *_Chapter 4* Late in the evening, as I prepared supper for everyone, the sound of stampeding cows and cowbells pierced the air. Nomalanga burst into the kitchen, panting and distraught. She had been outside helping Mother carry maize to the storehouse just moments before. "Gugu, Mr. Dlamini has brought cattle," she whispered, her eyes wide with fear. I felt my world crumbling. "What!" I rushed to the door, and my heart sank. There, I saw Mr. Dlamini and my father shaking hands, while Vusa, Mr. Dlamini's servant, led the cattle to the kraal. A bitter laugh escaped my lips, devoid of joy. I was exhausted from crying, but the pain still lingered. "Your father has finally sold me," I said, my voice laced with despair, as I gazed at Nomalanga. "What's funny about that, Gugu?" she asked, her voice trembling. I shrugged, feeling defeated. "Everything." Mother approached us, her face bruised and swollen, her eyes red from crying. "Gugu, listen," she whispered urgently. "I think you should run away, go somewhere far from here. I didn't know your father was capable of such cruelty. You can seek refuge with one of our relatives." I hesitated, but then my gaze fell upon Nomalanga. "If I run, Noma must come with me. Father will give her away to Mr. Dlamini, and I'll never forgive myself." Nomalanga nodded in agreement. "If I go, I'll go with all of you. If you take me, Gugu, Father will...kill Mother." Her voice cracked as she emphasized the word "kill." We stood there in silence, the weight of our reality crushing us. They all knew I was right, but the thought of escaping seemed daunting. The cattle's lowing and the cowbells' clinking seemed to mock us, a harsh reminder of our fate. As we stood there, frozen in fear and uncertainty, the darkness outside seemed to close in around us. The cattle's lowing grew louder, a constant reminder of the fate that awaited me. Mother's bruised face and swollen lips told a story of their own, a story of Father's anger and cruelty. I looked at Nomalanga, and she met my gaze with tears in her eyes. We both knew that our lives were about to change forever. I felt a surge of determination and protectiveness towards my sister. I would do everything in my power to keep her safe. "Let's go," I whispered to Mother and Nomalanga. "We can't stay here. We have to get away from Father and Mr. Dlamini." Mother nodded, her eyes darting towards the door. "But where will we go?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. I thought for a moment. We had a distant relative who lived in a nearby village. Perhaps we could seek refuge with her. "I know someone who can help us," I said, a glimmer of hope rising in my chest. "Aunt Thembi. She lives in the village nearby. We can go to her." Nomalanga's eyes lit up with hope. "Yes, let's go," she said, her voice filled with determination. But as we turned to leave, we heard Father's voice, loud and commanding. "Where do you think you're going?" he thundered. We froze, our hearts racing with fear. We knew that we had to act fast, or risk being trapped forever. #do u think Gugu ,will be able to escape?#
