🩺 Ndlalane Health | Wellness Check Wednesdays *“Happiness Costs Nothing… Or Does It?”* 🕒 _Read time: 2 minutes. Maybe three if you’re sipping tea._ ⸻ Good morning, beautiful people. It’s a Wednesday — which means we’re checking in, checking hearts, and checking egos at the door. Let’s get into it, the Ndlalane Health way: serious, soulful, and maybe a little bit spicy. 🌶️ ⸻ We’ve all heard it: “Money can’t buy happiness.” Right? I believe so too, I know it can’t buy true love, inner peace, or that one person’s approval. But let’s be honest — when the fridge is full, the rent is paid, and the kids are in school, your anxiety isn’t exactly doing backflips, right? Here’s the thing: A recent study out of Brazil’s Bolsa Familia program, the biggest conditional cash transfer system on earth, found something profound. Families receiving as little as $17 a month were significantly less likely to die by suicide. The condition? Just keep your kids in school and stay on top of vaccinations. That’s it. Then they pay you every month. That tiny, consistent financial lifeline became a buffer between despair and dignity. ⸻ 🧠 This isn’t about Prozac(antidepressants) vs. Pilates (exercise). *This is about poverty as a public health crisis.* Let’s stop pretending mental health is all about serotonin and yoga mats. Yes, therapy is amazing. Yes, exercise is important. But try telling someone who hasn’t eaten in two days to “just go for a run.” Not only is it tone-deaf, it’s dangerous. ⸻ Psychotherapist Crystal Jackson nailed it when they said, “Mental health isn’t a mindset problem, it’s a resource problem.” 💵 Money doesn’t fix everything but it buys time, therapy, safe housing, clean food, and yes, breathing room. If we are being real: The people shouting the loudest that “joy comes from within” are either living in a cushy penthouse or surviving in denial. ⸻ So today’s takeaway? Before you label someone lazy, dramatic, or depressed — ask what they’re carrying. Ask what they lack. Sometimes healing looks like a hot meal. Sometimes resilience is just a paid electricity bill. ⸻ Stay well. Stay kind. If you have more than enough, share some. That’s also medicine. ✍️ – DocSakhi _Ndlalane Health. Where dignity is medicine._

*Why are you told to eat first before taking certain medications and or supplements?* ‪What happens when you skip food?‬ Food is not just for nutrition it’s sometimes important for proper medication administration because it; ‪1. Protecting Your Stomach Lining‬: ‪Medications like NSAIDs diclofenac, ibuprofen can irritate your stomach lining. ‬Taking this drug without food increases the risk of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding.‬ ‪2. Improved Absorption‬ ‪Some medications, like metformin, amoxicillin are best absorbed with food. ‬ Skipping food can reduce their effectiveness and lead to poor outcomes.‬ ‪3. Can help reduce Side Effects‬ ‪Food can act as a buffer, preventing nausea, vomiting, or dizziness caused by drugs like iron supplements or aspirin‬ ‪4. Help prevent Low Blood Sugar‬ ‪Diabetes medications like sulfonylureas (glipizide) can cause hypoglycemia if taken without food. ‬ ‪The food you eat will ensure balanced blood sugar levels.‬ ‪5. Drug slow release: For some drug, taken food with it will slow down the release into your bloodstream, reducing the risk of side effects. Example, prednisone.‬ ‪6. Fat rich foods: Taking meals rich in fat can increase the absorption of drugs like griseofulvin.‬ ‪as a side note, keep in mind that some dairy products will interfere with certain antibiotics like tetracyclines. Always follow specific instructions.‬ #BeInTheKnow #NdlalaneHealth

❤️ Happy Valentine’s Day! 💐 Have a wonderful day, and most importantly, take care and love yourself. 💡 Remember, you have the right to make informed choices about your sexual and reproductive health, including whether or not to have children, how to space pregnancies, and how to prevent unintended pregnancies. ☔ Contraception can be used for both pregnancy prevention and planning, allowing individuals and couples to decide when and if they want to have children. Most people can use contraceptive methods safely, regardless of age or marital status. 👩🏽‍⚕️ If you have any health issues, a healthcare provider can help you choose the safest and most suitable option. Emergency contraception, such as the copper IUD and emergency contraception pill, can be used immediately after unprotected intercourse. Make sure to seek a pharmacy or healthcare provider as soon as possible within 72 hours. Highly effective contraceptive methods include: ➡️ Implants ➡️ IUDs 🛡️ Condoms (male and female) are the ONLY contraceptive methods that provide protection against both pregnancy and STIs/HIV. Using condoms correctly and consistently along with other methods enhances protection and peace of mind. Choosing the right contraceptive method depends on your health, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Explore your options and speak to a healthcare provider to find the best fit for you. Hello there! For the benefit of everyone, I will post some responses to questions paused by readers, related to the recent article on the thyroid above. If you haven’t gotten around to reading it. I would highly recommend it. *Question: Which foodstuffs can I eat to improve my thyroid health* For Beneficial Foods, you may want to Focus On - *Whole Grains* like brown rice - *Fiber-rich foods*, to manage constipation. - *B vitamins, and essential minerals.* Please check out the WhatsApp page, I posted something on vitamin B. - *Lean Proteins* like chicken, fish, and legumes to provide the body with the essential amino acids necessary for hormone production. - *Fruits* like berries and apples, I know a lot of people don’t like apples very much but are very good at controlling your blood sugar, especially in diabetic conditions, they are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and fibre - *Vegetables* like leafy greens and carrots, are packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. - *Healthy Fats* like avocado and olive oil. Lol 😝 avocados are not just for your faces people. They contain monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, supporting heart and brain health. - *Nuts and Seeds* like Brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds are excellent sources of healthy fats, proteins, selenium, and zinc. - *Dairy* if your gut can tolerate it then things like yoghurt and cheese in moderation can provide calcium, iodine, and protein. Especially iodine, this you can get from salt but you have to make sure it’s written iodized salt on the label. Cerebos is one good brand. (I’m not affiliated or a brand ambassador 🙂) Then we also have the devils to avoid, the types of food that tend to track us back from our progress. These are the Foods to Avoid as far as possible. 1. **Processed Foods** (e.g., fast food, snacks) - Often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. 2. **Soy Products** (e.g., tofu, soy milk) - May interfere with thyroid hormone production in large amounts. 3. **Cruciferous Vegetables** (e.g., broccoli, cabbage) - Can inhibit iodine uptake if consumed in excess, especially raw. 4. **Gluten** (if sensitive or celiac) - May trigger autoimmune responses in some individuals. 5. **Excessive Sugar** - Can lead to inflammation and weight gain, affecting thyroid function. 6. **Excess Caffeine** (e.g., coffee, energy drinks) - Can disrupt hormone levels and exacerbate anxiety. 7. **Alcohol** - Can interfere with thyroid function and hormone regulation. This is mentioned in the article. This list is not exhaustive and it is merely a helping guide to your dietary choices to support thyroid health. If you are already in the process of treatment for your thyroid complications, please discuss with your treating physician and nutritionist about structuring your diet plan based on your unique circumstances. *Question: Can intermittent fasting affect my thyroid health* This can affect thyroid function, especially if it leads to nutrient deficiencies or excessive caloric restriction. It may contribute to hypothyroidism in some individuals but can also promote metabolic health in others. Individual responses vary widely based on body size, and food types being taken after the fasting. Those sorts of things *Question: Can thyroid Conditions be reversible* *Hypothyroidism*: Remember this is low T4, meaning that in that chain of command, we discussed in the article, something somewhere somehow is making the thyroid not create enough. So because we need the entire orchestra to be in harmony, we begin to investigate, what could be the problem. Some problems like nutrition deficiency can be rectified but some like trauma or injury might not be resolved. So in the meantime when we still investigate we give you medication (like levothyroxine)to artificially give your body T4s and recommend lifestyle changes. In some cases, as I said, dietary changes may improve thyroid function, especially if the cause is iodine deficiency or autoimmune conditions. *Hyperthyroidism*: Opposite of the above, too many T4s. May require medication to lower them, radioactive iodine treatment, or surgery. - Lifestyle changes and a balanced diet can help manage symptoms, but reversing the condition entirely may not be possible for everyone. *Question: How can I achieve this thyroid harmony-the whole orchestra thing you mentioned in the article?* Basically, it can be achieved through everything we have spoken about Here is a summary: 1. *Regular Check-ups*: Monitor thyroid hormone levels regularly. Especially if you are at risk or already in the process of treatment.. these tests are not the cheapest in the world. 2. *Balanced Diet*: Focus on nutrient-dense foods and avoid processed foods. 3. *Stress Management*: Engage in activities like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. 4. *Adequate Sleep*: Aim for 7-9 hours per night to support overall health. 5. *Exercise*: Regular physical activity can help regulate hormones. Especially women and their estrogen. 6. *Limit Toxins*: Reduce exposure to environmental toxins (like heavy metals and plastics). 7. *Hydration*: Drink sufficient water daily. The best way to assess how much fluid intake you need per day is to use this quick mathematics. 40ml multiplied by your weight. e.g I am 70kg so I’ll say (40 x 70 =2800 ml which is approximately 2.8 litres. This is not just water but also anything I take with fluids maybe watermelon, juice coffee etc. That is why the recommended water intake is at least 8 cups (2L) to make sure you get close enough if not over. 8. *Educate Yourself*: Stay informed about thyroid health and treatment options. #BeInTheKnow #NdlalaneHealth

*PEPTIC ULCERS : WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG TO HEAL?* The first step in achieving a cure for peptic ulcer is identifying the type of ulcer. Is it Stomach Ulcer or Duodenal Ulcer ? Let’s build upon our first extract and continue, I hope I will address a bit more of the questions I’ve been receiving in my inbox. *TYPES OF PEPTIC ULCERS* A peptic ulcer is classified based on the location of the sore in the gastrointestinal tract. The two major locations where peptic ulcer occurs the most are the stomach and duodenum. Hence, giving us the two major types of Peptic ulcer ; 1. Gastric or Stomach ulcer 2. Duodenal ulcer Other types include; Esophageal ulcer and jenunal ulcers. Our focus however is on the two major types. *WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT?* Some people may have stomach ulcers and others may have duodenal ulcers. In some cases other people may experience both at the same time, and that’s called Gastroduodenal ulcers. *STOMACH ULCERS* In stomach ulcers, once you eat, you feel the pain because food makes contact with the sores. Also, remember that gastric acid is more produced when food comes into the stomach so it further causes more irritation. In stomach ulcers, people may lose weight due to the fear of eating and vomiting is common Specific symptoms include ; - Abdominal pain that comes soon as you finish eating - Abdominal pain that worsens once you start eating. - Nausea and vomiting. - Weight loss due to fear of eating. - Pain that easily radiates to the back (can be mistaken for a heart attack) - Vomiting blood (Hematemesis may occur) *DUODENAL ULCERS* While people with stomach ulcer may feel pain while eating or just immediately after eating, it’s different for people with duodenal ulcer. Remember, it’s the content of the stomach that enters the duodenum. When you start eating, the valve between the stomach and duodenum closes and food from the stomach won’t enter the duodenum for the time being. At this point the duodenum ulcer is happy and taking some breaks. Once digestive starts and food starts emptying into the duodenum again, the sores become irritated and you begin to feel the pain. In duodenum ulcers, the pain comes much later after eating. Most people believe it’s happening because they need to eat again. So, they tend to eat more with the aim to relieve the pain. In duodenal ulcer there are chances of weight gain Many people feel the duodenal ulcer kind of pain and it’s generally more common than stomach ulcers. Most of its occurrence is due to the bacteria H. Pylori, while Pain medications cause stomach ulcer more. Other times, both factors can cause either ulcer specific symptoms of duodenal ulcer ; - Abdominal pain when your stomach is empty. - Abdominal pain a few hours after eating. - Abdominal pain at nighttime. - Pain that is relieved when you eat. - Weight gain due to frequent eating. - Pain that relieves when the food you ate do not digest properly. - Dark tarry stool may be observed These revealed signs and symptoms do not rule out carrying out the required tests in diagnosing PUD. They are simply tips to help you modify your lifestyle while adhering to your medications. They are aimed at helping you seek medical help on time. #BeInTheKnow #NdlalaneHealth
