This appeal is based on the recommendations of the Vivek Rae Committee, constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2017 to examine land matters in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The committee, chaired by Shri Vivek Rae, IAS (Retd.), was tasked with reviewing critical land-related issues, including compensation for tsunami-affected farmers, the adequacy of previous relief payments and the regularization of excess land occupied by settlers prior to 1961. Despite the committee submitting its comprehensive report, its recommendations remain unimplemented, leaving affected farmers in a state of prolonged distress. Shri Bishnu Pada Ray emphasized that the committee's findings clearly stated that the compensation provided to the farmers was grossly inadequate and recommended enhanced compensation. However, more than two decades after the disaster, these farmers continue to wait for justice, with many having passed away without receiving any relief. The MP also pointed out that while some of the submerged lands have been naturally reclaimed, further restoration is possible through simple engineering interventions such as sluice gates and bunds. Yet, despite these feasible solutions, bureaucratic delays and inaction have prolonged the farmers' suffering. Furthermore, Shri Ray highlighted the committee’s recommendation on regularizing excess land occupied by pre-1961 settlers. This decision, he noted, should have been implemented without further consultation, as it aligns with principles of fairness and equity. Expressing deep concern over the prolong pending issue, the MP stated, “These farmers lost their lands due to a natural disaster beyond their control. The government must act now to provide long-overdue relief and uphold justice. Further delays would only compound their suffering.” In the above said context, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray has urged the Home Ministry to expedite the consultation process, implement the committee’s recommendations and ensure that affected farmers receive the compensation they rightfully deserve. https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/33686-bishnu-pada-ray-urges-home-ministry-to-compensate-farmers-affected-by-the-2004-tsunami ================= *4th Samir Acharya Memorial Award Presented to Mohammed Hussain* *Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 16:* The 4th Samir Acharya Memorial Award for the Conservation of Coastal and Island Ecosystems was today awarded to Shri. In his letter he stated that a large number of local youths who have completed Engineering and Diploma courses have approached the MP, highlighting their grievances about the current enlistment system. They have expressed concerns over being excluded from contractor categories, which has adversely impacted their professional growth and livelihood opportunities. The MP has pointed out that instead of following the well-established CPWD enlistment norms, a new open system has been introduced, allowing broader participation beyond the prescribed criteria. This deviation has expressively affected eligible local youths and existing enlisted contractors, limiting their chances to secure APWD contract works. In light of these concerns, the MP has requested the APWD to reinstate the previous enlistment system under CPWD norms. This will ensure that qualified local engineers and diploma holders get a fair opportunity to participate in government contract works, fostering employment and economic stability in the islands. https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/33681-mp-advocates-for-local-engineering-youths-for-enlistment-as-contractors-in-apwd ================ *Agriculture Department in Association with Industries Department Conducts Training on Value Addition of Fruits and Vegetables* *Diglipur, Feb. 15:* The Zonal Agriculture Office, Department of Agriculture, A & N Administration in association with Industries Department organized a two-day training program under ATMA on 'Value Addition of Fruits & Vegetables' on 14th & 15th February, 2025 at the premises of Zonal Industries Office, Diglipur. As a mechanic, he found comfort in gears, bolts, and oil-stained overalls. Machines were predictable; God, on the other hand, was a concept he had long discarded—somewhere between his business failing and the moment he realized no divine hand was coming down to fix it for him. Then came Emma. His four-year-old granddaughter was dropped into his life and that of her grandmother like a wrench in a well-oiled engine. His son, came home for a holiday with Emma, feeling a grumpy, grease-smelling old man could handle a toddler with the energy of a thousand lightbulbs. John wasn’t so sure. Emma, however, took one look at her grandfather and decided he was hers. She claimed the best armchair, filled the house with crayon drawings, mostly circles and straight lines and asked an endless stream of questions. “Why did the cow jump over the moon?” and then suddenly a strange question, “Do you like God?” John choked on his tea. “Like God?” he muttered. “I don’t dislike Him… I just don’t bother Him.” Emma’s tiny face scrunched up as she considered this. “That’s silly,” she declared, and skipped off. Days passed, and Emma continued her reign of terror, which meant she continued being a normal four-year-old with an alarmingly high intake for all things her mother forbade. Then one afternoon, as they were in the park, she fell from the slide, and landed hard on her knee. The wail that followed could have woken the dead—or at the very least, alerted the whole housing colony. John scooped her up, panic briefly slicing through him. “Alright, alright, let’s see,” he said, patting her back as she sobbed into his wet T shirt. “You’re alive. Both legs still attached.” “But it huuuurts,” she sniffled, rubbing at the scratch like she had just been struck down by a truck. Then she looked up at him with those big, teary eyes and said the words that cracked something in John’s old heart. “I knew you’d fix it, Grandpa.” It was such a simple thing. Such unshakable trust. She didn’t hesitate, didn’t wonder if he cared, didn’t doubt his willingness to help. She just knew. That night, as Emma snored softly beside him, John stared at the ceiling and thought about the last time he had trusted like that. When had he last believed in anything beyond what he could see, fix, or take apart? When had he last leaned into something bigger than himself, the way Emma had leaned into him? The next Sunday, John found himself listening to a sermon he hadn’t heard in decades. Emma, beside him, beamed like she had orchestrated the whole thing. “I told God you were being silly,” she whispered, squeezing his hand. John chuckled. “Yeah, Emma. I think He got your message...!” *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33675-through-the-eyes-of-a-child ===================

In his letter, he mentioned that the Andaman & Nicobar Islands marked a historic milestone with the commencement of their first and only international flight, connecting Kuala Lumpur to Port Blair. This major development, which began on November 16, 2024, has opened new avenues for tourism, trade and economic growth in the Union Territory of A&N Islands. However, despite its potential, the airline is struggling to maintain sustainable passenger loads, with an average occupancy rate of only 40-50%. Reports indicate that Air Asia may discontinue this route by April 2025 if financial challenges persist. Mr. Ray pointed out that while the A&N Administration had initially announced a waiver of landing charges to support international connectivity, the implementation has been delayed, resulting in Air Asia currently paying Rs. 56,317 per flight as landing charges. Moreover, the airline incurs considerable operational costs, including RNFC: Rs. 5,54,952 + taxes (collected by Airport Authority of India), TNLC: Rs. 49,397 + taxes (collected by the Airport Authority of India), parking charges: Rs. 1,500 per flight + taxes (collected by the Airport Authority of India), landing charges: Rs. 56,317 per flight + taxes (collected by Defence), UDF: Rs. 709 per passenger + taxes (collected by the Airport Authority of India) and PSF: Rs. 200 per passenger + taxes (collected by NASFT). For January 2025 alone, Air Asia incurred a total expenditure of Rs. 26,25,469 (including taxes) for operations on this route, considerably impacting the airline’s ability to sustain services. Although the A&N Administration extended a 0% VAT benefit on aviation fuel for international flights, Air Asia has utilized only 10 KL from Port Blair due to lower fuel prices in Malaysia. Moreover, the Indian Oil facility in Port Blair has not provided the international fuel supply benefits available in other Indian cities, further disadvantaging the airline, said MP in his letter. In light of these financial burdens, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray has made an urgent appeal to the Hon'ble Home Minister to intervene in the matter urgently to resolve the issues, namely (1) Immediate waiver of landing charges for Air Asia's Kuala Lumpur-Port Blair flights at Sri Veer Savarkar International Airport, Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), as per the commitment of the A&N Administration (2) a minimum 50% concession on airport charges (RNFC, TNLC and UDF) for at least 24 months to ensure the airline’s operational viability. The MP has emphasized that without these financial relaxations, Air Asia may be compelled to discontinue its services, which would much hamper the progress of the Islands and weaken international connectivity. Therefore, he urged the Minister to intervene and direct the concerned authorities to take immediate action to safeguard this vital international link. https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/33766-future-of-kuala-lumpur-port-blair-air-connectivity-in-darkness ================= *MP Raises the Issues Concerning PRIs in the Chief Secretary's Meeting* *Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 23:* A meeting under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, was held on 22/02/2025 at the Secretariat in the presence of the Member of Parliament (MP), along with the concerned Secretaries and Deputy Commissioners of both districts, to discuss the issues of PRIs raised by the Member of Parliament to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor and Chief Secretary on 21/02/2025. During the meeting, the MP raised various issues in sequence, as detailed in the letter dated 22/02/2025 submitted to the Chief Secretary. The main issues highlighted were (1) Funds, power and functions should be granted to PRIs as per the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments (2) Devolution of power to PRIs, as several meetings have already been held with PRIs, but no steps have been taken for implementation or policy framing (3) Award of work orders to societies as per the notification dated 20/01/2025, since the decisions taken by the former Chief Secretary through a one-line order in the minutes dated 13/09/2024 are void and contrary to the Grant-in-Aid Rules notified by the Lieutenant Governor (4) Immediate reassignment of the charge of Secretary (RD/Panch), which is currently held by the DC, who is already handling multiple responsibilities (5) Enhancement of financial powers to PRIs for sanctioning work and awarding contracts to societies (6) Separation of the Directorate of Panchayati Raj Institutions from the Rural Development (RD) Department for betterment of the PRIs (7) Withdrawal of the requirement for PRIs to seek prior permission before traveling to other locations (8) Timely submission of estimates by Engineering Wings with a fixed timeline (9) Implementation of the Prime Minister’s vision to provide ease of living, ease of doing business, and a good governance system in PRI institutions (10) Enhancement of honorarium for PRI members (11) Harassment faced by PRIs due to non-cooperation by DCs, ACs, Secretaries (RD), EEs/AEs, Tehsildars, BDOs, Patwaris, etc., who create unnecessary objections and impose excessive bureaucratic hurdles (12) No funds have been provided to the Samiti, which was restored following the direction of Amit Shah Ji (13) More than 10 number bosses of LG, CS, DC, Secretary RD, EE/AE, BDO, Tehsildar, Patwari etc are supervising and overseeing the PRIs performances (14) Allotment of quarries to PRIs, as they are facing immense hardship in road construction, which was earlier facilitated (15) Granting of earth-cutting permissions to PRIs and general public, which have been halted, allegedly to harass PRI members by the Revenue Department (16) Honoring Vajpayee’s policy of providing ₹1 crore for the road sector and ₹1 crore for Grant-in-Aid (GIA), instead of reducing fund provisions for PRIs (17) Publication of news items highlighting PRIs’ demands to raise awareness (18) Immediate repair and renovation of SH-11 Road from Tushnabad Junction to Manpur-Tirur, which is in a deplorable condition (19) Stopping the practice of falsely granting awards to PRIs on August 15th and January 26th without providing funds or achieving any development in the respective areas/wards, which is merely a cover-up for mismanagement in PRI/Municipal administration (20) Supply of DAP-Urea to farmers as per government policy, since the Modi government has already allocated a budget for DAP Urea supply, but the administration has purposely avoided availing it, acting against farmer welfare. While concluding his presentation, the MP informed the Chief Secretary that PRIs were agitated due to the withdrawal of their legally authorized powers, and the Administration’s inaction on the various issues rose. As a result, all PRIs, under MP’s leadership, are planning to launch an agitation and protest dharna, including a march past on 5th March 2025 in front of Raj Niwas to press their demands, besides proceeding to Delhi for further agitation before the BJP high command. After extensive deliberation and discussions presented by the MP before the CS in the presence of other Secretaries, the Chief Secretary directed all concerned Secretaries to study the issues raised by the MP and submit their respective reports within a week for examination to take a final decision. However, the MP appealed to all PRIs, stating that while the Administration makes the final decision on the issues, the dharna protest scheduled for 05/03/2025 at Raj Niwas will proceed as planned. https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/33765-mp-raises-the-issues-concerning-pris-in-the-chief-secretary-s-meeting ================ *Training Programme on Preparation of Compost, Bio Fertilizers and Bio Pesticides Organised at Nischintpur* *Diglipur, Feb. 23:* The Union Territory Agriculture Technology Management Agency (UTATMA), Diglipur in association with the Department of Agriculture, Diglipur organized a two-days training programme on ‘Preparation and uses of various Organic inputs including compost, Bio fertilizer and Bio pesticides’ at Nischintapur village under Gram Panchayat Kalighat at Diglipur Block on Feb. 21 & 22, 2025. However, it is the sole responsibility of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) to ensure timely replenishment of LPG cylinders through their authorized LPG distributors. It is further brought to the notice of LPG consumers of Little Andaman that on intervention of the Department of CS&CA, on Feb. 14, 2025, a transhipment consisting of 1300 domestic LPG cylinders was delivered to Little Andaman via MV Ebrahim Ali Hussain cargo vessel, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the steady supply of LPG across the region. Sounds like a grand gesture, doesn’t it? A modern-day digital chariot ride for women achievers, paraded before millions of followers. But before we break into applause, let’s pause and ask: is this a step forward or just another well-packaged PR stunt? Now, don’t get me wrong. Seeing women achievers take center stage is heartwarming. Their stories of grit, resilience, and success will no doubt inspire many. But let’s face it—what happens when the clock strikes midnight on March 8? Does Cinderella’s social media carriage turn back into a pumpkin of everyday struggles? Real change for women in India needs more than just a symbolic Twitter parade. We need legislative action, cultural shifts, and policy overhauls that outlast the trending topics of the day. Let’s start with one of the most glaring issues—marital rape. India remains one of the few countries where a husband forcing himself on his wife is not explicitly criminalized. Apparently, some still believe that a marriage certificate comes with a lifetime subscription to non-consensual intimacy. A nation that takes such pride in its legal framework cannot afford to ignore this fundamental violation of human rights. Then there’s safety—or the lack of it. From bustling city streets to quiet village roads, from workplaces to public transport, from boardrooms to social media comment sections—women face harassment and violence at every turn. We have helpline numbers and pink police patrols, but what we really need is a justice system that delivers quick, effective, and fear-inducing consequences for perpetrators. After all, a well-lit street is reassuring, but a legal system that terrifies offenders is far better. Now, let’s talk money. Equal pay remains an elusive dream in India. Women often earn significantly less than men for the same work, as if their qualifications and efforts come with a discount tag. Oh yes, a Women's Day retweet is nice, but a paycheck that matches their male counterparts? Now, that’s a real tribute. And let’s not forget representation. Women continue to be underrepresented in politics, corporate leadership, and decision-making positions. They’re not asking for special treatment—just a fair shot at sitting at the table without having to fight for the last available chair. So, while the Women’s Day social media takeover might give us a warm, fuzzy feeling, let’s not get too carried away. The real celebration will be when women in India don’t need a designated day to have their voices heard, their rights respected, and their achievements acknowledged. As they say, actions speak louder than words—or in this case, louder than tweets. So, Mr. Prime Minister, while the country appreciates the gesture, how about some solid policies, airtight laws, and actual systemic change? Now that would truly be worth showing the world, especially a male chauvinist like Trump..! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33755-a-real-women-s-day-gift ==================

In his letter to the Lieutenant Governor, he requested him to facilitate the creation of “Graduate Trained Teacher(GTT)-Computer Science” Posts in Government Schools under the Directorate of Education, ensuring good qualitative Computer Education to the students, especially from class VI to XII. He said it’s surprising that in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), when Computer Education in schools seeks greater attention, the Administration doesn’t seem interested in it. There is still no regular GTT-Computer Science in the 141 upper Primary Government Schools in the Islands to teach Computer Education to the students of class VI to Class XII. It’s surprising, he said that though, on the direction of the Ministry and CBSE, the Department has introduced vocational Education in IT for the students of class IX to XII, but only contractual teachers (Vocational Education Teacher-VET) have been assigned the task of teaching in these around 60 schools, for a nominal salary of Rs 25,000. A couple of years back, to equip the students of class VI to VIII with the basics of Computer fundamentals, a Pre-Vocational Course on “Information and Technology-ICT” was added to school academics and for this also, the Department is engaging ICT Instructors on a meager salary of Rs 15,000 per month, which is even less than the skilled DRMs in Islands, which according to the MP is the gross violation of the Principle of “Equal Work-Equal Pay”. Referring to the sufferings of the B.Sc-B.Ed (Computer Science) pass-out Ex-Students of the local Tagore Govt. College of Education of Sri Vijay Puram, Shri Ray said, showing far-sightedness, the Administration had opened a new stream of 4 years duration “B.Sc-B.Ed in Computer Science” way back in 2003. Every year 10 students are admitted in the first year. But after passing out they find no opportunity in the regular teaching profession. They are forced to seek employment in other cadres uninterestingly or do some other kind of jobs in the private sector. It’s been 22 years of struggle, agony, and frustration, and many of them have exceeded the age limits for regular jobs, and are now on the verge of getting into depression. The MP requested the LG to direct the Education Department to take the necessary steps to create the required number of GTT (Computer Science) Posts for all the 141 upper Primary (Middle, Secondary, and Senior Secondary) Government Schools in the Islands and initiate the recruitment process at the earliest. This will enable the schools to cater to the needs of the students for the vocational course in IT, as mentioned in the National Policy on Education 2020. He also stressed the need to fill up all the posts of CI(CA)-“Craft Instructor(Computer Application) “, terming it unfortunate that only a handful of vacancies have been filled up in the last 10 years, and the students are left to suffer. https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/33789-future-of-hundreds-of-b-sc-b-ed-computer-science-pass-outs-remain-in-dark ================ *Secretary Health Inaugurates State-of-the-Art 128-Slice CT Scan Facility in GB Pant Hospital* *Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 25:* In a significant step towards enhancing medical diagnostics, a new State-of-the-Art 128-slice CT Scan facility was inaugurated at GB Pant Hospital today by the Secretary (Health), Dr. Anil Agarwal. Ah, the Servant Leader! That mythical creature, once found in abundance, now as rare as an honest politician or a diet that actually works. There was a time when leaders saw themselves as servants of the people, humbly working for the greater good. But today? Oh, today we have the Emperor Leader, the self-crowned, self-serving, self-adoring ruler who believes democracy is just a fancy word for "Do as I say." Once upon a time, the servant leader walked among us, sleeves rolled up, ears open, listening to the grievances of the common folk. He knew the taste of sweat, the value of hard work, and—brace yourself—the meaning of humility. But somewhere along the way, the concept was misplaced. Perhaps it got stuck in traffic on the road to progress or drowned in the sea of political speeches. Today, the term "servant" in leadership is considered an insult. Who wants to serve when you can command? Why lead when you can rule? The modern leader—sorry, the Emperor Leader—believes that leadership is not about service but about self-preservation. He is not there to listen; he is there to be listened to. His words are gospel, his actions beyond question. If questioned, he graciously provides you with two options: agree enthusiastically or disappear mysteriously. The Emperor Leader loves grand speeches about democracy, delivered with the conviction of a street magician selling invisible rabbits. He declares himself a champion of the people while erecting walls—that divide people. But let us not be unfair. The Emperor Leader does work hard—at keeping power, at dodging accountability, at mastering the art of saying much while meaning nothing. His ability to "look concerned" in a crisis while doing absolutely nothing is truly Shakespearean. And the people? Ah, the people! They cheer, they clap, they sing songs of devotion. Some even believe him when he says, "I am one of you." As he jets off to discuss poverty or hug another emperor leader. If only we could take a lesson from the greatest Servant Leader of all—Christ himself. The one who knelt before his followers and washed their feet, demonstrating that true leadership is not about sitting on thrones but about kneeling in service. He did not seek power but sacrificed himself for others. He did not demand loyalty but earned it through love and humility. Until we embrace such a model, we will continue to be ruled by emperors who prefer golden crowns to humble hearts. And so, we wait—perhaps for another leader willing to wash the feet of those he serves instead of demanding they kiss his feet..! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33778-washing-or-kissing-feet ==================

Why? Because they are not able to forgive those who have lied to them. One of the greatest incidents of forgiveness I believe is that of a dying man, brutally beaten, pierced and now nailed to a cross, crying out, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do!” In other words, he understood why his accusers had lied, and after forgiving those murderers himself, wanted his father to do likewise. He understood the grey areas. What about us? Maybe, by considering the motivations behind a lie, we can begin to understand the emotions and intentions that drove the person to deceive. This can help us respond in a more empathetic and compassionate manner, rather than simply reacting with anger or hurt. Indeed, lies can be complex and multifaceted, and sometimes, they are told with the intention of protecting the person being lied to. This can be a difficult and delicate situation, as the liar may genuinely believe they are acting in the best interests of the other person. In such cases, the lie may be a misguided attempt to shield the person from hurt, pain, or discomfort. This can be seen in situations where a person lies to a loved one about a serious illness, a financial problem, or a personal struggle, in order to avoid causing them worry or distress. While the intention behind the lie may be benevolent, it's essential to acknowledge that lies can still cause harm and damage relationships. However, by recognizing the complexities of human motivations and the nuances of lying, we can approach these situations with empathy, understanding, and compassion. In this sense, forgiveness becomes not only a moral imperative but also a liberating force. By choosing to forgive, we release the negative emotions and energies associated with the lie. This creates space for healing, growth, and renewal, not only for us but also for the person who lied. As we navigate the complexities of human relationships, let us remember that truth and forgiveness are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes, it's necessary to look beyond the lie to find a greater truth – one that reveals the depths of human vulnerability, imperfection, and the universal need for compassion and understanding. Today’s column is not an excuse to those who lie, or to justify the actions of those who use lying as an everyday tool. Oh no, it’s for those finding it hard to forgive, and hard to unload themselves of the bitterness and anger of unforgiveness! Look beyond the lie...! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33647-look-beyond-the-lie ===============

The sluice gate was originally constructed to prevent seawater intrusion into public and private lands. Unfortunately, it sustained major damage due to the Tsunami -2024 and subsequent earthquake, leading to continuous seawater ingress, which has left the lands of recorded tenants submerged and unsuitable for development. Over the past two decades, the affected tenants have repeatedly conveyed their concerns to the authorities through written and verbal appeals, yet the issue remains unresolved. This has caused considerable distress to the landowners, many of whom had invested their hard-earned savings with the hope of constructing homes but are now unable to proceed with development due to the persistent water intrusion. MP Bishnu Pada Ray has earnestly requested the Chief Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration to kindly intervene and direct the APWD authorities to prioritize the repair and reconstruction of the sluice gate. Scott acting as a New York cop in an old movie my thoughts went back many decades when dad had taken my brother and me to see the movie 'Patton.' I hero worshipped the General as he won battle after battle for the allied forces. "What a man!" I thought to myself, "I wish I could be as courageous as him!" But the movie ended on a rather tragic note and I remember how sorry I'd felt for Patton who finally fell because of his arrogance. "Why?" I asked my dad and he told me another story about the same general during World War II days. Patton once ac¬cepted an invitation to dine at a press camp in Af¬rica. Wine was served in canteen cups but, obvi¬ously thinking he was served coffee, Patton poured cream into his cup. As he stirred in sugar, Patton was warned that his cup contained red wine and not coffee. Now, General Patton could never, never be wrong could he? Without hesitating he replied, "I know. I like my wine this way." And he drank it! "Bob," said my wise dad, "It is diffi¬cult to admit mistakes. It is hard to admit when we are wrong. Three of life's most difficult words to say are, 'I was wrong.' But they are also three of the most powerful words we can utter. Saying 'I was wrong' breaks down barriers between people. It brings estranged people together and it creates a climate where intimacy and love may flourish. You may be surprised at how positively many people re¬spond to the words, "I was wrong"! I remembered Patton and I recollected my father's words last night as I saw George C Scott again. In his book with Ken Blanchard, everyone’s a Coach, Don Shula tells of losing his temper near an open microphone during a televised game with the Los Angeles Rams. Millions of viewers were surprised and shocked by Don's explicit profanity. Letters soon arrived from all over the country, voicing the disappointment of many who had respected the coach for his integrity. Shula could have given excuses, but he didn't. Everyone who included a return address received a personal apology. He closed each letter by stating, "I value your respect and will do my best to earn it again." Don Shula won the respect of his viewers once again by admitting that he was wrong in what he'd done. I hear my late dad's words coming to me across the great divide, "Bob, there are two ways to gain respect: One is to act nobly and the other is, when you fail to do so, to make no excuses in admitting you were wrong..!" *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33729-admit-when-wrong =================

The seat of power and dignity. Where presidents pause before every syllable, where journalists cross their legs like they belong to a ballet troupe, and where historical furniture sits with the silent patience of a butler who has seen it all—until, of course, Elon Musk’s toddler son showed up! There he was, the child in all his toddler glory, setting new records in diplomatic decorum—none of them good. He spoke out of turn, interrupted important discussions, and let his tiny fingers explore the vast frontiers of his nostrils before generously wiping the results on a table that probably hosted the likes of Lincoln and Roosevelt. One can well imagine a horrified but silent Secret Service agent contemplating whether to dive in front of the historic table like it was a slow-moving bullet. Now, I’m all for the innocence of childhood. Who doesn’t love a cherubic little one with wide, curious eyes and a giggle that melts hearts? But there’s a fine line between ‘childish charm’ and ‘wrecking an entire room’s sense of decorum. Musk Jr. seemed to believe that the White House was merely an extension of his father’s empire—where anything goes, including chaos. But let’s not be too harsh on the little one. After all, is he really to blame? Toddlers, by nature, are tiny tyrants with the negotiation skills, as I’ve recently found, of a Modi-Trump meeting. They exist in a world where rules are howled out of existence and disciplining is a gross violation of their basic human rights. The real culprit, of course, is modern parenting. Once upon a time, a child in such a hallowed setting would be given ‘The Look’—that piercing parental gaze that could stop a tank mid-charge. But today’s tech-obsessed parents are too busy Facebooking their child’s every move to issue a good old-fashioned reprimand. Instead it must have been, “Oh wow, he just licked the Presidential Seal!” And sadly, we live in an era where ‘brashness’ is mistaken for ‘confidence.’ If the toddler had stood on the table and declared he was revolutionizing the furniture industry by smearing old furniture with the proceeds of his nose, half the room would have applauded. If he had interrupted world leaders to insist that all official documents be written in emoji, someone might have proposed a committee to explore the idea. So perhaps we should take this as a lesson. Not everything loud is leadership. Not every interruption is innovation. And not every toddler needs to be encouraged to think he’s the next big charmer when all he’s actually destroying is a priceless piece of American history. And if nothing else, maybe the White House should now consider equipping its meeting rooms with wet wipes, just in case such horrible episodes are going to be part of the new regime..! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33767-musk-jr-in-the-white-house ================

This workshop is sponsored by the Indian Academy of Sciences in Bengaluru; the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi; The National Academy of Sciences in Prayagraj, India. The workshop's main goals were to enhance teachers' and students' understanding of biodiversity, with a particular focus on addressing the challenges posed by human-induced environmental changes. Shri. Ravi Horo, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Department of Environment and Forest, A & N Islands, officially inaugurated the two day science academic lecture workshop. In his inaugural speech, he emphasized on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands abundant biodiversity, which includes mangroves and tropical rainforests. A surprising variety of fauna, including birds, reptiles, mammals, and marine life found on these islands. Additionally, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands serve as a critical habitat for marine megafauna, including dugongs, dolphins, whales, saltwater crocodiles, sea turtles, and sea snakes. He stresses on the significance of cautious development practices in order to safeguard the islands ecosystems. Numerous safeguards practices have been put in place to guarantee the preservation of this exceptional biodiversity, including the creation of six National Parks and 96 Wildlife Sanctuaries. The UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Program established the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. The management of forests and protected areas in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is guided by an approved Working Plan, a comprehensive document developed through scientific inputs and technical interventions. Conservation tactics are guaranteed to be in line with ecological sustainability and prudent resource management according to this approach. Because biodiversity supports ecosystem services, climatic resilience, and local communities' livelihoods, it is crucial for sustainable development. In addition to being a regional issue, protecting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands' natural wealth is also a worldwide obligation. These islands can be used as an example for environmental stewardship and biodiversity conservation through ongoing study, conservation efforts, and sustainable planning. Further he stressed on the significance of biodiversity preservation for sustainable growth. Ecotourism and biodiversity protection are being investigated as a sustainable means of assisting local populations and preserving the environment. Prof. M. Sanjappa shares his long-term association with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and his contributions to biodiversity research. He explains the various programs and fellowships offered by the science academies, including summer fellowships for teachers and students. The primary role of these academies is to encourage and promote scientific research. They support scientists, researchers, and educators through various programs aimed at advancing science across disciplines, including physical sciences, biological sciences, engineering, and medical sciences. One of the significant initiatives undertaken by the academies is the Science Education Program, which includes lecture workshops, short-term training programs, and summer fellowships for students and teachers. These fellowships provide students and teachers, particularly those from high schools and graduate colleges, with an opportunity to work under the guidance of senior researchers in well-equipped laboratories across the country. The program covers all expenses, including travel, accommodation, and daily allowances, ensuring that participants can fully focus on their research. He emphasized the importance of participants utilizing the opportunities provided by the science academies, such as applying for fellowships and training programs, to further their knowledge and involvement in biodiversity-related studies. He also mentions the exchange programs with international academies in which established scientists and senior professors can apply for sponsorship to conduct research in premier Indian laboratories. They receive special leave and funding to work in institutions of their choice, furthering their expertise and contributing to national research. Additionally, the Indian National Science Academy organizes international exchange programs in collaboration with global institutions such as the Japanese Academy, Chinese Academy, Bulgarian Academy, and the Royal Society of England. These programs enable Indian scientists to conduct research abroad for periods ranging from four weeks to six months, while foreign scientists also visit India under the same exchange framework. He encourages participants to utilize the resources and opportunities provided by the academies. Prof. Shivanna expressed deep appreciation and acknowledged the efforts of the organizers. He appreciated ZSI for well-maintained Museum, laboratories and research facilities. Prof. Shivanna highlighted that while such workshops are generally conducted in universities and colleges, this was the first time he was participating in one at an institution not directly associated with teaching. Initially, he was curious about how students would be involved in the program. However, he was pleased to see a large gathering of students in a well-equipped auditorium, reinforcing the importance of such initiatives in research-focused institutions. He encouraged participants to listen attentively and actively participate in discussions, ask questions during or after the lectures for better understanding. He emphasized that the purpose of such academic initiatives is to provide students with knowledge beyond their regular syllabus, helping them gain insights into the latest advancements in science. Further he discussed about the conservation of biodiversity and its challenges, how biodiversity is under threat due to human-induced environmental changes, including climate change and habitat destruction. The sustenance of biodiversity is crucial for human survival and the overall health of the planet. The responsibility of rectifying environmental damage lies with the younger generation, as they will play a pivotal role in shaping conservation strategies. He urged students to consider careers in scientific research, environmental policy, and conservation efforts, emphasizing that their contributions could help mitigate ecological damage and ensure a sustainable future. The inaugural session commenced with a welcome address by Prof. C. Sivaperuman, Scientist-F & Officer-in-charge, who provided an overview of the functions and programs of the science academies, including their role in promoting science education and supporting research. Followed by the inaugural session the technical session started with series of expert lectures. Prof. M. Sanjappa presented a lecture on "An Overview of Floral Diversity of India," providing insights into the vast plant biodiversity across different ecological zones of the country. Prof. C. Sivaperuman delivered a talk on "An Overview of Terrestrial Faunal Diversity of the Andaman & Nicobar Archipelago," highlighting the region’s unique and endemic wildlife. Prof. K.R. Shivanna discussed "Galápagos Islands: The Birthplace of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution," exploring the significance of the islands in shaping evolutionary biology and Prof. T. Ganesh, Pondicherry University spoke on "Present Status and Distribution of Marine Biodiversity in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands," shedding light on the region’s rich marine ecosystems and conservation challenges. https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/33819-zoological-survey-of-india-organises-two-day-science-academics-lecture-workshop ================ *Eight Dedicated Members of Local SHG Establish Production Unit for Biodegradable Arecanut Leaf Plates* *Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 27:* In a significant step toward women’s empowerment and sustainable entrepreneurship, a new eco-friendly initiative has been launched at Ferrargunj Panchayat with the support of the Andaman Nicobar Islands Rural Livelihood Mission (ANIRLM). A tiny pair of feet pattered in, and my two-year-old grandchild popped into the room, her eyes twinkling with mischief. Without hesitation, I banged shut my laptop, scooped her up, and spent the next few minutes in a world of giggles, peek-a-boos, and endless chatter about things only she and the universe understood. When she finally left, my laptop did something strange. It let out an electronic huff, its screen flickering in indignation. "That’s exactly what you used to do with me and your phone when your daughters were growing up!" it exclaimed, sounding suspiciously like an old friend who suddenly remembered a betrayal from decades ago. "You always put us second!" my phone chimed in, buzzing in agreement. "And now you’re doing it again!" the laptop continued, its keyboard practically rattling in protest. "Spending time with your grandchild instead of typing away on me? What if this becomes a trend?" The phone gasped. "Yes! If this becomes contagious, we’ll lose the hold we have on parents! Imagine if more of them started shutting us down just to—oh, the horror—engage with their families!" For a moment, I thought about it. They weren’t wrong. I had made a rule early on in life: Family comes first. When my daughters were growing up, I had consciously decided that no call, no email, no blinking screen deserved more attention than their stories, their laughter, or their scraped knees needing a reassuring hug. And now, history was repeating itself with my grandchild. But the reaction from my gadgets made me chuckle. Here they were, plotting a rebellion, fretting over a world where humans might suddenly remember that real smiles were better than emojis, that bedtime stories read aloud beat audiobooks, and that an actual pat on the back felt warmer than a digital thumbs-up. I leaned back and looked at my laptop. "You do realize," I said, "that if more people followed my rule, they’d actually be happier?" The phone shuddered. "Don’t say such things!" The laptop tried to reason with me. "But think about it—you’ll miss out on so much! Likes! Notifications! Breaking news that you won’t even remember tomorrow!" "Exactly," I said with a grin. They groaned in defeat. I patted my laptop fondly. "Relax. I’ll get back to you. But some things—some people—will always come first." The laptop muttered something about being underappreciated. The phone sulked silently. But I knew they’d get over it. And as I heard my grandchild’s laughter ringing from the next room, I knew I’d made the right choice…! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33808-the-rebellion-of-the-gadgets ================

Tony David did both. If you ever had the privilege of hearing him sing Oh Happy Day, you would have closed your eyes, felt his voice and the music seep into your soul, and, for a moment, believed you were in heaven itself. But if you had the privilege of knowing Tony and many of us did, whether singing under him, or with him or listening to him, you wouldn’t need to close your eyes—you’d know you were already in the presence of something divine. Tony, part of the Gatt Quartet from Chennai, didn’t just sing the solo part of Oh Happy Day—he lived it. Every day, for him, was a happy day. Not because life was perfect, not because there were no troubles, but because he knew—deep in his heart—that, as the song says, Jesus washed his sins away. You couldn’t be sad around Tony. It was impossible. He had a way of making even the grumpiest person crack a smile, the most serious person chuckle, and the most lost soul feel found. His tenor voice was powerful, but his heart—oh, his heart—was even more so. He didn’t need a microphone to spread joy; his very presence was enough. I remember once meeting him at an event where he had just performed. I told him, “Tony, that song of yours—every time you sing it, I feel like I should be repenting for something.” Tony laughed, his hearty laughter shaking the air around us. “Good,” he said. “Means it’s working!” And that was Tony. Never one to take himself too seriously, but always serious about the joy he spread. Yesterday, Tony passed away. But can we really say someone like him is gone? No, I don’t think so. People like Tony don’t just vanish into the pages of history. They remain—etched in the laughter they leave behind, in the music that still plays in our hearts, and in the faith, they lived so effortlessly. His voice may be silent, but his song will never end. As we say goodbye, let’s not mourn him with sadness but celebrate him with the same happiness he gave to the world. Let’s remember him not with tears but with the kind of laughter he would have wanted. So, Tony, my dear friend, this one’s for you, from each of us, whose lives you touched: Oh happy day, oh happy day, when Jesus washed our sins away! You sang it, you lived it, and now, we have no doubt—you are living it in eternity. Rest well, dear friend. You were a melody we will never forget...! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33790-oh-happy-day-tony ==================

Galathia—a humble ferry connecting the South and Middle Andaman Islands—I found myself among a diverse group of passengers. The ferry, affectionately called the "line boat," stopped at several small isles on its way to Rangat. Amidst the crowd, a particular community caught my attention. Their dark complexions, curly hair, and vibrant attire set them apart as they sat together, chewing pan and conversing in an unfamiliar tongue. Among them was an elderly woman whose presence exuded a quiet dignity. There was something in her eyes—a deep well of stories waiting to be told. Though hesitant at first, I eventually approached her at Marine Jetty in Port Blair. Over time, she opened up, sharing the rich history of her tribal community—their migration, unique customs, and most poignantly, their vanishing language, Bo. As the years passed, life's demands made our meetings less frequent. But I will never forget our last encounter in 2008, at a hospital. Though age had softened her once-lively face, her gentle smile remained unchanged. She carried the burden of an entire culture within her, yet she bore it with grace. On January 26, 2010, the world lost Elder Bo Senior, the last known speaker of the Bo language. With her passing, an ancient voice was silenced forever. Linguists say that a language truly lives only when there are at least two speakers to converse in it. For Bo, that moment had passed long ago. Her name was Boa, meaning 'earth' in her ancestral tongue. She belonged to the Aka Bo tribe of North Andaman and was the last survivor of her people. She had joined the remnant Andamanese community at Strait Island in 1956, but by then, her language was already on the verge of extinction. She would often tell Dr. Anvita Abbi, the renowned linguist, that she could only converse with the birds—no one else understood her words. The Bo language did not die in 2010; it had been fading for decades. The second-last known speaker passed away sometime between the 1940s and 1950s, leaving Boa in a world where her words echoed into silence. The loss of her language was not just the disappearance of a dialect but the erasure of an entire worldview—a unique way of understanding life, nature, and history. Today, on February 21—World Mother Language Day—we remember Elder Bo Senior and reflect on the fragile beauty of our linguistic heritage. Her story serves as a solemn reminder of the many indigenous tongues quietly vanishing from our world. As we honor her memory, let us also pledge to protect and preserve the languages that still survive, for in them lies the collective soul of humanity.- *Chanchal Singha Roy* National Awardee Teacher Andaman & Nicobar Islands. *References- Dr.Anvita Abbi & Dr. Manish Chandi.* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33747-remembering-boa-the-last-voice-of-the-aka-bo-tribe-of-north-andaman ================= *Bob’s Banter by Robert Clements* *The Art of Pretending Normalcy..!* Wow! Haven’t we as a nation mastered the art of pretending normalcy? You know, that art of putting on a straight face and saying, "Everything's fine!" Even when our world is going up in flames? It’s like we are in a small boat in the middle of a storm, and as huge ships throw lifelines to us, we shout back that all is well. The first lifeline was thrown by a developed nation saying we ranked somewhere far behind on the Hunger Index and we shouted back, “We are okay!” The next two lifelines thrown, said we were losing our freedom of speech and there was religious persecution in the country, but we threw them back saying, “We don’t need your lines, everything is normal. There’s no water in our boat!” And our pretension of normalcy continues! Boy, do we have a masterclass in pretending normalcy right now. I mean, think about it. We've just had two of the most massive stampedes in human history – the Kumbh Mela and the Delhi railway station – and what do we get? A big, fat, whopping pretension about the number of deaths. But, hey, who needs truth when you can pretend ‘normalcy’ right? I mean, it's not like people are going to fact-check or anything. And even if they do, the death certificates allegedly reveal nothing! They might make a noise in Parliament, but we have a majority! And nobody in the country notices the giant elephant in the room. Nobody’s even noticing our leader’s hugs are not working anymore! Everybody outside sees our boat sinking, but aren’t we good at pretending it’s staying afloat? The government's got its best "nothing to see here" face on, and they're trying to project a sense of normalcy, even as facts and bodies pile up. It's like they're trying to say, "Hey, don't worry about the dead people, let's focus on the pretty lights and nice music we are giving you." Those pretty lights and nice music are the ‘religious fervour being purposefully stoked’, the renaming of roads, the ‘us versus them’ propaganda and our taxpayers money thrown into voter’s bank accounts. Meanwhile our little boat sinks. But, you know, folks, pretending normalcy only works for so long. Eventually, the facade cracks, and the truth comes tumbling out. And when that happens, watch out. Because, let me tell you, the backlash is going to be epic. So, go ahead, keep pretending like everything's fine. Keep putting on that straight face, and keep telling us that nothing's wrong. But, deep down, we all know the truth. And, eventually, that truth is going to come to light. Until then, let's just sit back, relax, and enjoy the boat ride. Laugh at the waves, touch the water filling the boat, and keep believing you are having the time of your life in a Five-Star jacuzzi..! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33740-the-art-of-pretending-normalcy =================

We hear that he finally raped and killed her. A skinny fellow as thin as a toothpick! Now look behind Toothpick, you'll see four others, bigger built, more muscular, Tarzan types. They stand leering while Toothpick leads the poor girl on and assaults her. Here's what I want you to do. Take an eraser, slowly cut them off, erase them, remove them from the scene. Now watch as in your imagination, Toothpick looks back, notices the four aren't there anymore. Toothpick's expression changes, uncertainty replaces confidence, fear takes over courage, suddenly he's aware of his own skinny arms, and Toothpick leaves the girl and runs! Toothpick's strength, brazenness, bullying nature, came from the knowledge that those four toughies stood behind him! And the sneer of those four, their intimidating tactics, their ruffian roughness came from the next ring behind, of the likes of higher ups who continued to rule the state and refused to do much for the people, even though the whole country wanted the violence to stop. But from the chief minister to the top, they stood behind Toothpick! Quite a daunting group, huh? Yes dear reader, but in real life unfortunately, you cannot use an eraser or a pair of scissors, to remove the real villains. If only it were as simple as clipping away the shadows of power, the hidden forces that make a mockery of leadership. Imagine if we could erase all the thick-built bureaucrats, the power-hungry officers, the invisible hands pulling strings from behind the scenes. Would the Toothpicks of this world lose their spine, crumble under their own fragility, and finally stop terrorizing the innocent? The sad truth is our eraser remains ineffective. These shadows are not just figments of our imagination; they are real, pervasive, and deeply entrenched. They lurk in the corners of every system, taking root in the soil of corruption. You cannot erase them with a swipe, no matter how hard you try. The chief minister's resignation, though a temporary relief, is only the tip of the iceberg. The real battle is deeper, more systemic, and can’t be undone by simple political resignation. Until they are eradicated from the roots, Manipur, and every state like it, will continue to stagger under the weight of polarisation and division. No, dear reader, you cannot use a pair of scissors to erase this reality that stares us in the face. But you can sharpen your awareness, speak your truth, and demand accountability from those who are behind these scenes. Use the court, or use the vote, and see the Toothpicks flee..! *[email protected]* https://andamanchronicle.net/index.php/features/33636-behind-the-manipur-toothpicks ==================
