As-salāmu ʿalaykum warahmatullāhi wabarakātuhu, brothers and sisters in Islām! The best days of the world are around the corner. Imagine if 10 individuals were chosen out of 360 people—think of the virtues those 10 would possess. The same applies here: the best 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, honoured above other days, are about to start. ⸻ How do I prepare for the best 10 days of the year? Firstly, here are some of the virtues of the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah: 1. Allah swore by them in Suratul Fajr. He (SWT) said: “By the dawn, and by the ten nights” (Surah Al-Fajr, 89:1-2). — Allah draws our attention to the significance of a thing by swearing by it. 2. It was during these days that Allah completed the Deen, His favour upon us, and approved Islam as our religion. 3. These are the best days of the world, and righteous deeds are greatly multiplied in them. 4. In them is the day of ’Arafah. Fasting on ’Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year. 5. In them is the day of An-Nahr (slaughtering), the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah. 6. The virtues are many and endless. Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijjah).” Then some companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Not even Jihad?” He replied, “Not even Jihad, except that of a man who goes out putting himself and his wealth in danger (for Allah’s sake), and returns with nothing.” (Sahih al-Bukhari) ⸻ So, how do I prepare for these 10 great days? 1. Begin with sincere repentance. 2. Have unwavering determination to benefit from these 10 days. 3. Stay away from all sins, and seek forgiveness for what you know and what you don’t. ⸻ Recommended acts of worship: 1. As-Solāh (Prayer): Be punctual with the five daily obligatory prayers. Perform them in congregation (for men). Begin and maintain your Nawāfil and Tahajjud. 2. Increase kindness to parents, family, friends, and teachers. 3. Maintain your ties of kinship. 4. Fasting: Try to fast the first 9 days. If you can’t fast all, then at least fast on the Day of ‘Arafah. 5. Make peace and reconciliation between people who are in conflict. 6. Charity: Give to the poor and needy. Remove harmful things from pathways. Smile at your brothers and sisters. 7. Visit the sick. 8. Increase recitation of the Holy Qur’an. 9. Protect your tongue and private parts from ḥarām. 10. And engage in every other act of worship. ⸻ May Allah (SWT) grant us the ability to benefit from these 10 blessed days. Āmīn.
