Shell to buy TotalEnergies’ stake in Nigeria’s Bonga offshore field for $510 million British oil giant, Shell Plc, has agreed to purchase TotalEnergies’ 12.5% stake in Nigeria’s Bonga oilfield for $510 million, a strategic move that increases its interest in the country’s deep-water sector. This was announced in a news release from Shell today seen by Energy in Africa. The acquisition will increase Shell’s ownership in the field to 67.5% from 55%, reinforcing its stake in the OML 118 Production Sharing Contract (OML 118 PSC), an oil mining lease offshore Nigeria that includes the Bonga field. The agreement comes as Shell seeks to grow its combined integrated gas and upstream total production by 1% annually through 2030. . . . #EnrrgyinAfrica #Shell #TotalEnergies #Bonga #offshore #Nigeria #Energy #Africa

Germany is now farming electricity. Literally. Engineers and scientists at Fraunhofer ISE are teaming up with VOEN Vöhringer GmbH to take solar energy to the next level, by mounting solar panels right above crops. It’s called agrivoltaics, and it's kind of genius. In one pilot site in Fronreute, cherry orchards now sit under elevated solar canopies that generate up to 420 kilowatts per hectare while keeping the fruit cool, protected from UV rays, hail, and heavy rain. The best part is that the shade helps reduce irrigation, improves crop quality, and uses existing greenhouse setups, saving big on construction and emissions. Smart software ensures both crops and energy production thrive without stepping on each other's toes. Early results show yields are just as good, if not better. This dual-harvest approach is catching on fast across Europe and Asia, with Germany and Japan leading the charge.

People often think that CO2 is the only greenhouse gas (GHG) which contributes to global warming and climate change. However, there are other important GHGs such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) which are also tracked under global climate agreements and which countries report under their international obligations under the Paris climate agreement. In addition to CO2 emissions, Trinidad & Tobago also emits significant volumes of methane and small volumes of nitrous oxide. Methane in T&T comes from a number of sources including the energy sector, waste sector and the agricultural sector. https://energynow.tt/blog/methane-emissions-in-tampt #energynews #energynow #energychamber #methane #co2 #emissions #cbam

Embracing the “circular economy” will be Africa’s best bet at leapfrogging into the next industrial revolution as key players. For a long time, Western economies have been built on the “take, make, dispose” model, a linear system that fueled growth during and after the industrial revolution. However, as consumption soared, so did waste. Since 2016, the world has generated 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, and by 2050, that figure is projected to reach 3.4 billion tons. Advanced economies, while only 16% of the global population, produce 34% of the world’s waste. Africa stands at a crossroads to redefine global economic leadership through the lens of the circular economy. By transforming its abundant renewable resources and harnessing the energy of its vibrant youth (60% under 25), Africa can become a powerhouse of sustainable innovation. Africa”s Renewable Energy Might: As of 2024, Africa’s total renewable energy capacity reached nearly 67 GW. The African Union aims for 300 GW by 2030, more than quadrupling current levels. Africa holds 60% of the world’s best solar resources. In 2024, the continent added 2.5 GW of solar, bringing the total to 19.2 GW, with 23 GW more projected over the next four years. Current installed wind capacity stands at 9 GW, with 140 planned projects totaling 86 GW, almost ten times today’s capacity. Africa added 2 GW of wind in 2023, reaching 39 GW in total, but this is just 10% of its potential. In East Africa, geothermal power makes up 23% of Kenya’s installed capacity. Africa needs robust partnerships to scale investments and enable technology transfers to position Africa as the circular growth leader Franco Bonghan Co-Chair African & Caribbean Energy Network #CircularEconomy #AfricaRising #RenewableEnergy #TheTimeIsNow #SustainableDevelopment #GreenGrowth #Innovation #CleanTech #PartnershipForGrowth #NextIndustrialRevolution
