HIGH QUALITY DAIRY COWS TO BE IMPORTED Jamaica’s dairy industry is set for a major boost as 250 high-quality dairy cows are to be imported this year, through the Jamaica Dairy Development Board (JDDB) Livestock Improvement Programme. Chief Technical Director in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Orville Palmer, made the disclosure at the World Milk Day ceremony at Brown’s Town Primary School in St. Ann, on Friday, June 6. Mr. Palmer emphasised that this strategy is central to improving the genetics of the local herd.


JAMAICA'S PORTS MEET GLOBAL SAFETY STANDARDS IN INTERNATIONAL AUDIT Jamaica’s continued access to vital maritime trade routes has been safeguarded following a successful international audit verifying the safety of the nation’s ports and harbours. This achievement has strengthened global confidence in the country’s maritime infrastructure, which supports more than 90 per cent of its trade. The audit, conducted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under its Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS), assessed Jamaica’s compliance with international maritime obligations, particularly its responsibilities under Chapter V of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) that focuses on navigation safety.


FOOD HANDLERS' PERMIT VALIDITY EXTENDED TO TWO YEARS Food handlers’ permits will have a two-year validity period, effective January 1, 2026. This forms part of the Environmental Health Unit’s overhaul of the National Food Handlers’ Training and Certification Programme. Addressing Wednesday’s (June 11) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, shared that more than 300,000 Jamaicans apply for and renew permits annually.


HURRICANE PREPARATIONS IN TOP GEAR IN WESTMORELAND Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy, says Westmoreland is prepared for the hurricane season, which began on June 1. In an interview with JIS News, the Mayor pointed out that hurricane preparedness activities in the parish commenced in March. “We started what you could call light preparation from that time, which continues up to the present. Most of the shelters have been inspected and marked for use during emergencies to ensure that the public has safe and accessible spaces just in case we have a disaster and must relocate persons to these shelters,” Councillor Delancy said.


GOV'T EXTENDS CONDOLENCES FOLLOWING INDIAN PLANE CRASH The Government of Jamaica has expressed its deepest condolences to the Republic of India following a deadly plane crash in Ahmedabad earlier today (June 12), which claimed the lives of more than 200 people. In an official statement, the administration extended sympathy to the Government and people of India, as well as to the families, friends, and associates of those who perished in the tragedy. Warm wishes were also offered for the full and speedy recovery of the injured.


NHF RESPONDING MORE TO THE NEEDS OF JAMAICANS The National Health Fund (NHF) has been responding more to the needs of the Jamaican population, says Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton. Addressing Wednesday’s (June 11) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, he shared that prior to 2016, the NHF was issuing fewer than one million prescriptions each year. “Last year, NHF issued some three million prescriptions to Jamaicans. We have moved from 16 to 24 categories of illness. GENDER MINISTRY CHAMPIONS MALE EMPOWERMENT THROUGH TARGETED PROGRAMMES The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport is advancing its male empowerment agenda through targeted programmes aimed at supporting Jamaican men, promoting positive masculinity, and fostering healthy family relationships. Speaking during the Outstanding Father Awards Ceremony at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on June 13, Portfolio Minister, Hon. Olivia Grange, reflected on the progress of the Male Empowerment Unit, established in 2016, describing it as a symbol of support and transformation for men across Jamaica. “We took the decision to bring men into the national gender conversation, not as an afterthought but as partners in progress. That vision gave birth to the Male Empowerment Unit, and today, it stands as a beacon for males across Jamaica,” she shared.

KSAMC INTENSIFIES DRIVE TO RECOVER OVERDUE ADVERTISING FEES FROM MEDIA HOUSES The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Revenue Department has intensified efforts to recover outstanding advertising fees from nine media houses. Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, made the disclosure during the KSAMC’s monthly meeting on Tuesday (June 10). The sitting was held at the Corporation’s offices in downtown Kingston. “Our Revenue Department has written to nine such [media] entities. Two have since made payments, one has requested additional information and the others have not even acknowledged receipt,” he said.
