✍️🎙️🙋‍♂️ *Keeno Musanyusa here!* June 2025 📌 Thank you all for the fruitful discussion on music, choirs, singing groups, and artistes. In principle, all entities that affiliate themselves with the church—whether choirs, solo artistes, music ministries, or other creative groups—ought to operate under the guidance and oversight of the respective church leadership or boards. These boards are not only administrative in function but are spiritual stewards tasked with nurturing, supporting, and directing the gifts within the body of Christ. > “Let all things be done decently and in order.” — 1 Corinthians 14:40 The role of these church boards should go beyond supervision. They should provide: Spiritual mentorship Financial support where possible Social and emotional encouragement Resources such as covering composers' costs, trainers, studio time, media publicity, and facilitating bookings for events. The goal is clear: to help choirs and gospel artistes build credible brands that can command audiences, influence the masses, and most importantly, win souls for Christ through evangelistic outreach, music rallies, and worship experiences. > As Ellen G. White wrote, “Music, when not abused, is a great blessing; but when put to a wrong use, it is a terrible curse.” — Evangelism, p. 505. Therefore, it must be cultivated, supported, and sanctified by mission-driven intent. However, let us also appreciate that beyond soul-winning, these ministries offer other significant value: Entertainment that uplifts the spirit. Healing of broken hearts and restoration of mental health. Education through song. And economic empowerment for those who dedicate themselves—composers, trainers, instrumentalists, costume designers, and media teams. Some singing groups have evolved into full-time ventures, becoming sources of income for founders and team members. Here lies the crossroads—Christian ministry meets business enterprise. Many of these groups, out of necessity, begin to self-regulate and operate as profit-making entities, navigating sustainability while attempting to remain ministry-aligned. This presents a governance dilemma: Should they wait for church board resolutions that may delay progress or move ahead in self-determination to remain viable? This tension is not just spiritual but legal and structural. Hence, this is an urgent item we must now unpack and formally address. Let us consider the landscape of entities involved: Church Choirs Independent Singing Groups Ministries Not-for-Profit Foundations For-Profit Companies Sole Proprietorships Talent Associations Single Artistes Painters, Designers, Ushers, Makeup Artistes, DJs, Emcees Authors, Directors, Producers, Promoters, Funders These diverse identities are currently interwoven under one umbrella called "gospel music ministry," but with no clear differentiation or regulation. This complexity begs us to ask: > Is it time to classify, define, and regulate these roles within the body of Christ? > “For the body is not one member, but many.” — 1 Corinthians 12:14 Each has a role. But without structure, even the strongest limbs will falter. Legal Implications also abound: If a singing group is earning, it may be required by law to file as a business, pay taxes, or register as a non-profit or religious entity. The Uganda Companies Act recognizes companies limited by guarantee (ideal for ministries), while the NGO Act governs charitable foundations. Operating outside this framework opens such groups to liability and conflict—spiritually and legally. My appeal is simple: Let us come together—musicians, church boards, spiritual leaders, legal minds, and policy thinkers—to have a national and spiritual conversation. We must define these entities clearly and guide them on how to register, operate, report, and collaborate, all while remaining true to the Great Commission: > “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations...” — Matthew 28:19 As Ellen White powerfully puts it: > “Every talent entrusted to us is to be used for His name’s glory in lifting up fallen humanity.” — Messages to Young People, p. 22. Let us not confuse personal ambition with divine commission. Let us regulate to empower, not to suppress. Warm regards, Hon.
