Today marks a historic milestone in the journey of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH). With the approval of our conversion to a full-fledged university by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are stepping into a future of greater possibilities, innovation, and impact. This transformation is not just a change in status; it is a reaffirmation of our long-standing commitment to technical and vocational education in Nigeria. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19Z7BJvcX2/

It was a great honour to welcome the Honourable Minister for Education to Yaba College of Technology for the commissioning of the Yaba Tech Digital Academy (YTDA) and the launch of our ICT Skills Lab for Computer and Phone Repairs. This landmark event marked another significant step in our mission to provide cutting-edge technical and vocational education that empowers young Nigerians with relevant digital skills. Yaba Tech has always been at the forefront of technical and vocational training, and the establishment of YTDA further cements our reputation as a leading institution for skills development. The Digital Academy is designed to equip students with hands-on experience in ICT, preparing them for opportunities in the ever-evolving digital economy. One of the most inspiring aspects of this initiative was the unveiling of our All-Girls Tech Hub, created for young women aged 13 to 24 under the Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) programme. Seeing these young girls actively engaged in learning and innovation reinforced my belief in the power of education to transform lives. This project is a crucial step towards bridging the gender gap in technology and ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital revolution. The Honourable Minister’s visit also underscored the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), particularly in alignment with its 6-point agenda. His recognition of Yaba Tech’s contributions and his announcement regarding the institution’s transformation into a university for TVET education was a moment of great pride for us all. This transition will enhance our capacity to train a highly skilled workforce, ensuring that more Nigerians have access to quality technical education. Furthermore, the Minister’s vision to establish one TVET university in each of the six geopolitical zones is a groundbreaking policy that will expand opportunities for students across the country. We are proud that Yaba Tech is playing a pivotal role in this national strategy for educational and economic development. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Minister for Education for his unwavering support, as well as to our Governing Council, management, lecturers, staff, and students for their dedication to this institution’s progress. The commissioning of the Yaba Tech Digital Academy is not just a milestone for our college but a significant contribution to the future of education in Nigeria. As we look ahead, we remain committed to building, innovating, and shaping the next generation of leaders and skilled professionals. Dr. I.A. The journey towards fostering a robust link between academia and industry has been a defining aspect of my tenure as the Rector of Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech). I have always envisioned an institution that does not only impart theoretical knowledge but also ensures that our graduates are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in the global workforce. The recent event, ‘A Day with Industry Partners,’ is a testament to our commitment to bridging the gap between education and industry. It was an opportunity for key stakeholders in various industries to interact with the academia, share insights, and develop strategies to enhance youth employment and enterprise development. This initiative was not born out of chance but out of a deliberate effort to create an ecosystem where innovation and practical experience thrive. At Yabatech, we have taken significant strides to ensure our students are exposed to real-world applications of their knowledge. Our Centre for Linkages, Partnership, and International Relations plays a crucial role in facilitating collaborations that provide our students with internship opportunities, entrepreneurship development, and access to international best practices. Our efforts have yielded remarkable results. The recognition of our students and staff for their outstanding innovations in waste-to-wealth initiatives during the event was a moment of pride for me. It reinforced the belief that with the right support and opportunities, our students can compete globally and drive transformative change in our society. Collaboration with esteemed institutions and industry partners such as the Foresight Institute of Research and Translation (FIRAT) in Rwanda, Semicolon Africa, and UNICEF has further strengthened our resolve to continuously improve our curriculum and research capabilities. Through these partnerships, we are exploring biomanufacturing projects, modern mechanic village initiatives, and digital literacy programs that will significantly benefit our students and the wider community. One of the most crucial aspects of our engagements is ensuring that the skills our students acquire align with the demands of the labor market. The global workforce is rapidly evolving, and Nigeria must not be left behind. Our students must be prepared to meet the highest standards of competence, creativity, and innovation. Moving forward, Yabatech remains committed to deepening academia-industry linkages, fostering research collaborations, and driving skill-based training that will empower our students to become future leaders and problem solvers. Our ultimate goal is to produce graduates who are not only employable but who can also create employment, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of our nation. I am deeply grateful to all our industry partners, members of the governing council, and academic staff who continue to support this vision. Together, we will build an institution that remains a beacon of excellence in technical and vocational education in Nigeria and beyond.
