About Mitchells Plain Allotment Garden Society (MAGS)
Established in 2019, MAGS is a Mitchells Plain Garden Society that seeks to provide a voice and support for and to Mitchells Plain Gardeners and promote the supplementing of gardenings' Food Security & Recreational function with an economic utility [usefulness] for households. A need for a garden society was identified going back to 2019, which resulted in the establishment of what was then called the Mitchells Plain Allotment Garden Alliance (MPAGA) steering Committee, via the Forum of Cape Flats Civics (FCFC) a forum of ratepayer, resident and allotment garden associations from across the Cape Flats. But advocacy work with the City of Cape Town by Cape Flats Civics to provide support and recognise gardening as a recreational function goes back to 2005, culminating in a presentation to the Athlone Subcouncil for their 2007IDP. In 2013 engagements started with like minded civic (resident, ratepayer & gardener) associations on the establishment of a voice for the Cape Flats that culminated in the formation of the Forum of Cape Flats Civics in February 2017. The garden society executive committee recommemded to the MPAGA General Meeting to adjust the name from an Alliance to society and hence the organisation is now called the Mitchells Plain Allotment Garden Society (MAGS). MAGS members are made up of Allotment & Household gardeners Allotment Gardening is the alloting of communal/ municipal land per household on application. As MAGS we facilitate this process with the City of Cape Town, especially for those who wish to garden (flowers, veggies, fruit & nut trees & herbs etc) but don't have sufficient space at home to grow all the healthy food needed by your family. We also support household gardeners, by facilitating further support from the City of Cape Town and Dept of Agriculture, for gardening equipment (water tanks, well points, gardening utensils etc) and consumables (compost, seeds etc)
