Before industrialized farming conquered the continent, the crops that fed Europe were adaptable varieties that evolved as peasants freely exchanged seeds, from harvest to sowing, generation after generation. Reviving these seed systems could protect our food supply from future climate shocks – if EU regulations don’t strangle them out completely. Our latest piece from Unbias The News takes you to Greece and Romania, where locals are fighting monoculture and preserving the diversity of European heritage by exchanging "peasant seeds" at DIY festivals (where the food has got to be off the hook). EU regulations are looming to endanger these seeds, and the long history of collaboration they contain inside them.
