It’s 3am in the morning and I’ve decided to face some hard truths about this campaign: first, the podcast is on hold. Second: libraries aren’t going to open on Saturdays. It’s just not happening. Before you jump me, lemme explain how we got here: 1. I think it’s delusional to think a few signatures are going to persuade the city to pay staff to work on Saturdays, much less convince them to meaningfully invest in libraries as physical structures, and their content and the value they bring to the community (and believe me I know delusion). 2. The reality of the situation is The City of Ekurhuleni is broke. The city is prioritising other infrastructure projects, and we can’t convince them to care about libraries. We just can’t. I also don’t think escalating this to the provincial level will do much because the MEC of sports and rec doesn’t seem to give a flying fuck about anything but sport. I don’t even think he knows that libraries are part of the sports, arts and culture (but whatever). 3. Another force that’s working against us is the general atmosphere of treasury is about to fuck us all over, and the shit is obviously gonna run downhill. So I’m afraid we’re stuck here unless something happens to put libraries and/or literacy on the spotlight. But also that’s probably not gonna yield anything because we know that government is famous for being compliant right (nope). But, I don’t think it’s totally hopeless (the word totally is doing a lot of work in this sentence). I just think I need to move the goalpost a little (a lot). To be completely honest, this whole process has been like trying to demolish a wall one brick at a time with a plastic spoon with the tools and resources that I have. I mean if I tried long enough I could, probably, eventually get through the wall, but that’s impossible because world war 3 will start before that and I don’t think I wanna survive that. Anyways, touch grass while you still can, and visit your local libraries while they’re still open.
