*LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL* _By Pastor Mensa Otabil_ Thursday 22nd May 2025 *THE DANGER OF LAZINESS* *Scripture Reading:* Proverbs 26:1-16 > _The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth. The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly. *Proverbs 26:15-16*_ A lazy person is slow and idle. In the book of Proverbs, the fool is sometimes described as ‘lazy’ or ‘slothful’. They always choose the easy way out. - *Buries his hand in the bowl.* The lazy person is likened to a person who sits at a table to eat. Before him is a bowl of food. He puts out his hand to eat the food and keeps their hand buried in the food. This refers to a person who is presented with an opportunity. They take the first step towards the opportunity and get stuck with that first step. Some people report what they have done at a certain point in time. After a year, they would still be where they were a year before. Year after year, they stay in the same place. Their hands are buried in the bowl. - *Wearies him to bring it to his mouth.* The passage explains why the lazy person keeps his hand buried in the bowl. The task of bringing the food from the bowl to his or her mouth is too tiresome for the lazy person. This is about people who do not follow through on their work with the mental rigour and physical action needed to make progress. They want someone else to dig their hands out and place the food in their mouths. When you give them an assignment, they will expect you to also perform the tasks. - *Wiser in his own eyes.* The sad thing about the lazy person is that he doesn’t recognise that he is lazy. By their own logic, they are hardworking and committed to their work. The passage says ‘seven men who can answer sensibly’ cannot convince the lazy man that he is lazy. That is the reason why some people stay where they are and never make any progress. They blame everyone else but themselves for their failures. Some individuals live their lives like the lazy man. Some families live their lives like the lazy man. Some companies live their lives like the lazy man. Some nations live their lives like the lazy. All of them are wise in their own eyes, never learning. Are you one of them? *Prayer:* *Heavenly Father, deliver me from all forms of laziness. Help me never to shy away from work that needs to be done. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL* _By Pastor Mensa Otabil_ Saturday 24th May 2025 *WHERE ARE YOU BUILDING?* *Scripture Reading:* Matthew 7:24-29 > _“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matthew 7:26–27_ There’s as much wisdom to glean from what is foolish as there is from what is wise. We must endeavour to avoid the traits of the foolish and desire to learn from and exhibit the characteristics of the wise. The parable teaches us that given the best materials, there are still consequences arising from where we choose to build. What we decide to build on counts. This lesson is applicable in all life’s endeavours; that though you may have an excellent education, a wide network of friends or some other leverage, building wrongly will lead to a wasted investment on the day of testing. The foolish builder in the passage chose to build on the sand. What does that say about the attributes of a foolish builder? • *He is influenced by surface appearances.* The foolish man is described as one who is taken in by appearances. He does not take time to go beyond the surface. These are people who are always impressed by the superficial. They spend so much on the outward impression, but very little on internal strength. Unfortunately, they get to impress others who are like themselves. • *He settles on shifting grounds.* Sand shifts. Sand moves. Sand is a weak foundation for building your life, marriage, company or nation. There is nothing firm in a life built on the sand. One moment they are going right; the next moment they are going left. There’s no conviction and there’s no faith. Their life is all about what is easy and convenient. If it’s convenient for them to steal, they steal. If it’s convenient for them to lie, they lie. If it’s convenient for them to betray their friends, they betray them. Their ground shifts according to which wind is blowing. • *He builds for short-term success.* The foolish builder is preoccupied with the victories of the here and now. They seek applause for the accomplishments of today and not how what they’ve built will look like over time. They fail to exert the needed effort to analyse and build an enduring structure. The reality is that when weak foundations are tested, they fail. Time is required to build anything that lasts. Considering the pain and regret that results from building a marriage, business or career only to watch it collapse because of a weak foundation, it is worth the effort to build for the long-term and not the short-term. Ensure that your foundations are right so you can endure adversity when it comes, because it will come. _*Prayer*: Heavenly Father, help me to be a hearer and doer of your word. Enable me to build things that endure. In Jesus’ name, Amen_

*LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL* _By Pastor Mensa Otabil_ Friday 23rd May 2025 *BUILD WITH WISDOM* *Scripture Reading:* Matthew 7:24-29 > _“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. *Matthew 7:24-25*_ Note that this parable is about the basic foundations we build on and not the materials we build. The parable assumes that both builders had access to the same building materials, and both builders faced the same environmental attacks. The difference is in what they built on – their foundation. In the days of Jesus, the region He lived in was prone to flash floods after rains. What kept buildings during these floods was the foundation on which the house was built. It was therefore important to choose rightly what to build on, as it would determine whether your house would outlast the floods. The first of the two builders mentioned is the Wise Builder. The Wise Builder built on the rock. His choice of foundation is instructive and teaches us several lessons. A Wise Builder: - *Digs deeper beyond the surface.* A wise man is a digger. He digs for deeper truth. He explores deeper principles. He does not rest until he has found an eternal truth to build on. He takes time to build with the future in mind. He focuses on what He intends to become and pays the price to go beyond the surface. - *Builds on enduring foundations.* A wise man builds on principles that go deeper than what is fashionable and popular. They focus on values, ideas, concepts and disciplines that are enduring and often depart from popular culture. Popular does not always mean right. Our anchors must be firm and deep enough to keep us from conforming to trends just because they are in vogue. - *Builds for long-term success.* The wise man anticipates the effect of the environment and time on what he or she does. They do not build on popular notions without thinking about how they will stand when buffeted by the storms of life and time. Ensure that your fundamentals are right, for what you’re building to be able to withstand adversity. Your faith will be buffeted; your choices will be buffeted. What will happen after the storm hits? Be like the Wise Builder – strive to find rock and then build on it. *Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, your word is my rock and foundation. Help me to dig deep to build against every storm. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL* _By Pastor Mensa Otabil_ Wednesday 21st May 2025 *BE DILIGENT* *Scripture Reading:* Proverbs 21:1-11 > _The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty. *Proverbs 21:5*_ The word ‘diligent’ means to be enthusiastic about your work. A diligent person approaches their assignment with passion and hard work. Sometimes the wise person is also called ‘diligent’. 1. *A diligent person accepts challenges.* To make progress in life, we must be ready to undertake tasks that stretch our skills and capabilities. That means that we don’t reject challenging assignments simply because of their difficulty. Even when we are asked to take up a new chore within our professional field, our initial response should be to accept the challenge. We must not be like those who first reject all unfamiliar tasks, whether hard or easy. The enthusiasm with which we embrace difficulty helps us to approach it positively. 2. *A diligent person develops solutions for problems.* The wise man or woman understands that actions do not stand on their own. That is why successful companies and nations invest a lot in research. There is a direct link between an organisation’s quality of research and the quality of its results. Diligence demands that we work meticulously to produce answers to the questions facing us. To do that, we look at what we are faced with from various points of view and scenarios. 3. *A diligent person anticipates obstacles to their plans.* One of the things wise people know is that our best intentions can come against unforeseen situations. They understand that every action will trigger a process of reactions. As a result, wise people do not just think about what they are doing; they also consider what will happen after they have done their part. In real-life situations, our plans do not usually go according to plan; someone or something will oppose our best intentions. It is like playing a chess game – you don’t just think of your play; you also think about what will happen after you make your move. 4. *A diligent person works hard to implement solutions.* In the end, diligence helps us to see our good intentions through to the end. What we thought about and wrote about must become real. *Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, help me to be diligent in what I do. I commit to doing my work thoughtfully and thoroughly. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL* _By Pastor Mensa Otabil_ Tuesday 20th May 2025 *THE RESULTS OF WISDOM* *Scripture Reading:* Exodus 31:1-11 > _To design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. *Exodus 31:4-5*_ God gave Bezalel the technical skill, the capacity to think and to have mastery in all manner of workmanship”. The word ‘workmanship’ refers to one’s trade, occupation or business. Bezalel’s wisdom was related to his craft. You cannot have wisdom in every area of life. Generally, each one of us must have wisdom for our lives. This includes wisdom in choosing your friends, how to plan your life, how to run your home, how to raise your children and how to run your finances. In addition to that, we need wisdom for the work we do – our professions and occupations. Bezalel’s wisdom was for his workmanship. In that area, he had the wisdom to do two things: 1. *To design – to draw out a plan.* The wisdom, understanding and knowledge that God gave Bezalel enabled him to work out a plan to do a task. The task was the construction of the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant and all the special instruments of service. God shared his intentions with Moses, who in turn made these intentions known to Bezalel. After receiving his marching orders from Moses, Bezalel had to develop a design and a plan for what he had heard. No matter how complex a problem is, wisdom helps us to work out a plan to solve it. Wisdom enables us to design solutions. But wisdom goes beyond the design. It brings the design to life. 2. *To work – to cause to be to make.* In the Hebrew world, wisdom was not just a theory – it was a practice. Wisdom doesn’t only talk – she also works and produces results. It is possible to offer solutions to problems on paper. The question is, does it work? When the nice ideas are implemented, will we see actual results? Bezalel was both a designer and a builder of solutions. From observing Bezalel, we can conclude that: 1. *Wisdom always has a plan.* Wisdom will find a way out of a problem. 2. *Wisdom designs solutions.* Wisdom offers solutions. She does not allow herself to be so overwhelmed by problems that she does not act. 3. *Wisdom produces results.* Wisdom’s works are seen. They are visible for all to see. *Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, help me to design solutions to problems, and help me to produce results with my ideas. In Jesus’ name. *Amen.*_
