Following the successful restoration of the River Leven, an ambitious new project is underway to breathe life back into one of Fife’s cherished waterways. Partners Fife Council, SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency), and Fife Coast and Countryside Trust are joining forces to restore a 5.8-kilometre stretch of the Back Burn – also known locally as the Conland, Coul, and Balbirnie Burn – between Rhind Hill in the Lomond Hills and Newton, just north of Markinch. The Restoring the Back Burn project, a vital part of the wider Leven Programme, aims to return this historically significant waterway to a more natural state. Supported by funding from the Water Environment Fund (WEF) and Fife Council, the restoration will improve biodiversity, reduce flood risks, and create enhanced greenspaces for the community to enjoy. Residents have come together to re-establish their local community council. Following a petition from the community, the Royal Burgh of Pittenweem & District Community Council will be re-established if enough people come forward. Residents are now being invited to stand for election to the Community Council. To be eligible to stand, you must aged 16 years or over, live in the Community Council area and be registered to vote. To re-establish the Community Council, eligible nominations must be received by 4pm on Thursday 27 February 2025. If more than 10 nominations are received, an election will take place by postal ballot. Community Councils are made up of people who care about their community and want to make it a better place to live. As well as representing the community, Community Councils help run activities which promote their communities and bring local people together to help make things happen. If you’re interested in becoming a community councillor in Pittenweem & District, or just finding out more about what’s involved, the notice of election, timetable and nomination packs are available at www.fife.gov.uk/communitycouncils

Inverkeithing High School is being replaced and a new school is already under construction on a site in Rosyth. As the new school will not be in Inverkeithing, a new name for the school is being sought. In an initial consultation the public were asked for their views on a number of previously suggested names and given the opportunity to add any suggestions of their own. Now we’re encouraging pupils, staff, parents and the wider public to pick their favourite from the shortlist of four names. Read more and take part in the consultation: https://www.fife.gov.uk/news/2025/second-consultation-on-sw-fife-high-school-name

Fife Council has set its budget for 2025/26 and agreed much needed investment of almost £10m in health and social care and over £9m to fix Fife’s roads over the next three years. A council tax rise of 8.2% will help to pay for these investments across the Kingdom and bridge a budget gap of over £5m. https://www.fife.gov.uk/news/2025/fife-council-sets-budget-for-202526

This Valentines Day and Mother’s Day we're spreading the love with free bus travel in Dunfermline! The City of Dunfermline Area Committee agreed to fund this initiative last year, with free bus travel in Dunfermline on Sunday 1, 8, 15 and 22 December 2024. There’s budget remaining so Valentines Day and Mother’s Day have been added. It’s a great way to visit Dunfermline City centre for shopping and spending time with family and friends at local restaurants, cafes, and bars. This initiative not only supports local businesses but also encourages using eco-friendly public transport, helps out households without a car, and reduces carbon emissions. Free bus travel on Friday 14 February and Sunday 30 March 2025 covers trips made on Stagecoach and Bay Travel services within the Dunfermline zone area.
