Freighter crashes into moored vessel. The Russian captain of a cargo ship is under investigation for allegedly operating his vessel while intoxicated after it collided with a moored ship while departing the Port of Bremen in Germany on Thursday. According to the Bremen Water Police, the 55-year-old master of the Wilson Nanjing, an 8 500 DWT coastal freighter, grazed the bow of a vessel that was securely berthed at Terminal 1. The captain, who has not been identified, had briefly undocked his vessel when he crashed into the moored vessel. No injuries were reported, however both vessels sustained minor damage in the incident. Water police officers who responded to the scene allegedly detected a strong smell of alcohol on the captain and conducted a voluntary breathalyser test. The test revealed a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 1.6 per ml, more than three times the legal limit under German maritime law. Read more : freightnews.co.za

UK warns of rising maritime risk as Gulf tensions surge. Following Wednesday’s news that CMA CGM is officially reinstating regular rotations through the Suez Canal, while lines like Hapag-Lloyd adopt a wait-and-see-approach, maritime trade in the wider Middle East region remains on tenterhooks. This is after British maritime authorities sounded an urgent warning to commercial shipping in the greater Arabian Sea area, citing a sharp rise in regional tensions that could endanger vessels passing through some of the world’s most vital waterways. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, alongside the Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa and the Joint Maritime Information Centre, issued a coordinated security alert on 11 June, highlighting an increased threat level in the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The advisory pointed to a “deteriorating regional security climate” that could expose seafarers to direct harm. The development comes amid a worsening diplomatic standoff between the US and Iran with the two countries locked in a stalled negotiation process over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. A sixth round of talks is expected to take place this weekend in Oman but optimism is in short supply as both sides harden their positions. President Donald Trump has publicly insisted that the US will not rule out the use of military force should talks fail to curb Iran’s uranium enrichment programme. Read more : www.dronexpress.co.zw

Marine insurance in spotlight after rough week at sea. The mis-declaration of cargo to avoid stiff insurance and shipping costs continues to be an issue in the freight industry, says Mike Brews, director of Horizon Underwriting Managers. Speaking to Freight News in the same week that a roll-on roll-off (roro) vessel was first completely gutted by a suspected lithium-ion fire before a dangerous cargo explosion caused a box ship blaze off the coast of India, he emphasised the need for insurance integrity. Brews, who also heads the Cargo Committee at the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), said: “The accurate declaration of cargo is paramount to all of us. “If things are managed and looked after properly, then we can prevent a lot of these losses from occurring.” He said this is especially the case when lithium-ion batteries get too hot and “become a source of ignition” when they are located too close a vessel’s machine room, possibly because of mis-declaration. However, Brews also cautioned against the fear mongering attached to on-board lithium-ion fires, especially in the wake of the Morning Midas, the roro that was destroyed off the Alaskan coast earlier this week. #NewsUpdates Shippers should expect cargo movement disruption across the board because of impending strike action by the United National Transport Union (Untu), the biggest workforce lobby group representing employees at Transnet. Heneways said in a logistics advisory sent out to its clients that the labour action “may have a direct impact on national freight movement and logistics operations”. The diversified freight forwarder highlighted the following potential impact on operations: Delays in cargo movement via Transnet’s freight rail and port operations. Port congestion and reduced efficiency at terminals across the country. Extended lead times for import/export shipments. Possible disruption to container collection and delivery schedules. The advisory said: “Following unresolved wage negotiations and ongoing concerns around working conditions and infrastructure at Transnet, Untu has issued notice of its intention to initiate protected industrial action. The strike is expected to commence shortly, with dates to be confirmed. As a critical link in South Africa’s freight and logistics chain, Transnet’s operations are integral to the services we provide. We are actively engaging with our network of partners and terminals to minimise any disruptions and implement mitigation strategies where possible.” Heneways has advised cargo owners to “review supply chain timelines and make adjustments where necessary” and “allow for potential delays in planning and logistics coordination”. The forwarder also advised shippers to communicate concerns about urgent or time-sensitive cargo.

#NewsUpdate The National Retail Federation (NRF) has welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump’s administration that it will reduce tariffs on imports from China for 90 days to continue trade negotiations. “We applaud the US and China for agreeing to a 90-day pause on the 125% reciprocal and retaliatory tariffs. We are encouraged by these constructive negotiations, which provide for a significant de-escalation in the current trade relationship,” said NRF President and CEO, Matthew Shay. “This temporary pause is a critical first step to provide some short-term relief for retailers and other businesses that are in the midst of ordering merchandise for the winter holiday season.” Shay said the move laid the foundation for substantial progress in achieving “truly fair and balanced” trade relationships with China and other trade partners around the world. “We urge the administration and our Chinese trade partners to continue discussions to address the ongoing issues, work to remove the remaining national security tariffs, and provide long-term stability between the two largest global economies.” The NRF is the nation’s largest private-sector employer, contributing $5.3 trillion to annual GDP and supporting more than one in four US jobs – 55 million working Americans.
