The Fellowship of Christian Unions ’(FOCUS) in Kenya is a large organization which disciples and trains up Christian leaders from among University students. Their Short-Term Experience in Ministry (STEM) programme sends young people out to assist in communities and churches. This year, we received reports from several young women who went out to teach in schools among less-reached peoples and refugees. Each of them reported good strides in academic achievement among their students, but also an interest in spiritual matters from the children and the forming of relationships in the community. Sally, who served in a refugee camp, had these takeaways from her time: 1. Serving in a predominantly Muslim environment requires patience, understanding, and discernment in sharing the gospel. 2. Building strong relationships within the community fosters trust and opens opportunities for meaningful faith discussions. 3. Consistent personal devotion is vital for spiritual sustenance and effective ministry. 4. Adapting to new ministry environments can be both challenging and enriching, offering opportunities for growth. Such valuable lessons for these young Christians, as they move forward in their training and consider future ministry! Short-term experiences often are pivotal moments for young adults and lead them to seriously ponder God’s call in their lives. Even if they don’t become full-time missionaries in the future, they are more likely to pray for the lost and to financially support missionaries.
