Military correspondent Doron Kadosh updates 👆: The Home Front Command confirms that one of the missiles that exploded this morning in the Gush Dan area was a cluster munition, a “dispersing munition.” This refers to a missile that scatters several small bombs while it is at a high altitude of about 7 kilometers in the air. At that height, the missile’s warhead opens and splits, and about 20 small bombs fly out from it in a radius of about 8 kilometers. The Home Front Command says that each of these small dispersed bombs weighs approximately 2.5 kilograms. These are bombs with an “impact mechanism”—meaning that when they hit the ground, they explode. The Home Front Command emphasizes that this is a missile that was already known. The damage caused by each of these small bombs is similar to that of a short-range Hezbollah rocket: “The threat is wider geographically, but it is much smaller than the warheads of ballistic missiles, which weigh an average of about 400 kilograms.” Following the incident, the Home Front Command launched a public information campaign today regarding the new threat of cluster bombs: 1. Protective measures remain unchanged—as with any other threat, it is required to enter a protected space with no change. 2. The dispersion of the small bombs means there are quite a few unexploded ordnances - therefore, the emphasis to the public is that in any place where such an unexploded ordnance is identified, people should be careful, keep their distance, and not touch it - and of course, report it to the authorities.
