Question - Ma, It is said that God is all-knowing, all-loving and all-powerful. Why then does He allow so much sorrow and grief to continue in the world that is His creation? How can He be endowed with all those three attributes and in spite of it let the misery of the world run its course? Sri Anandamayi Ma - Everyone has to reap the fruit of his actions. The suffering is for your own best. A mother occasionally gives a slap to her beloved child for his own good, in order to keep him on the right path. God cleanses you from the effects of your actions committed life after life by what you call suffering. When a fond mother gives her baby a bath, the child may scream desperately, yet the mother will not let the baby go until she has thoroughly washed and scrubbed him. Then she will carefully wipe the child, dry his tears and take him on her lap. Likewise, when you have been cleansed, God will comfort you and take you into His arms. Whatever happens in this world is His Lila, His pleasure.

The sense of want, does it not arise because the desired object is not obtained? When one's desire remains unfulfilled, fruitless, to continue craving for the same thing and be disappointed time and again, surely it is futile. So long as there is desire, the experience of want and sorrow is – from the worldly point of view – but natural. Whatever you may desire that is of this ever-changing world will bring you sorrow, even though momentary happiness may be had at times. Just following the rules mechanically like a puppet will not do. Of course, to become a marionette (a puppet controlled from above using wires or strings in plays) in the Lord's hand is good, but He Himself as Reality-directed action, having become evident in every vein and artery, in the very marrow of your bones, will take you in His direction at the auspicious moment. Never allow any opening for depression or dejection. Keeping the flag of hope flying, full of joy remain wedded to your present practice. Become filled with divine ecstasy steeped in its delight. The universe is in fact an embodiment of ananda. Just as it is true that as soon as you have completed all your duties, Kripa (grace) gets manifested automatically, similarly, ahaituki kripa (unmerited grace) is also true: it cannot be said why it happens. No question regarding any cause makes sense there: it is His nature, His lila: He is doing Kripa in that manner also - whatever mode of manifestation comes at whatever moment. He Himself exists also as the Observer: hence there cannot be any blemish of partiality in Him. Creation is beginning-less, Karma is also without a beginning. Why did such a difference come into existence in this creation? Who will reply?
