About Agriculture and Food Authority
Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) is a State Corporation in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development established by the Agriculture and Food Authority Act No 13 of 2013 to operationalize the Crops Act No 16 of 2013. The Act consolidates the laws on regulation and promotion of agriculture and makes provision for the respective roles of national and county governments according to the provisions of the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Kenya. The role of the Authority is to Regulate, Develop and Promote Scheduled Crops value chains for increased economic growth in Kenya. The Authority is currently comprised of the following Directorates. 1. Coffee Directorate. 2. Fibre Crops Directorate. 3. Horticultural Crops Directorate. 4. Food Directorate. 5. Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate. 6. Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops Directorate

Agriculture and Food Authorityβ Coffee Directorate this week participated in the 2nd African Coffee Trade Fair (ACT 2025) held at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi. ACT is a unique platform connecting Kenyan coffee growers with overseas buyers, focusing on direct sales of Kenyaβs top speciality coffee beans and fostering long-term business relationships. By bringing quality coffee to buyers and boosting revenue for growers, ACT drives sustainable, direct trade for both coffee growers and buyers.

The AFA-Food Crops Directorate conducted a sensitization forum on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for scheduled food crops in Mombasa County. Among the stakeholders present were KEPHIS and KALRO The forum aimed to raise awareness on; 1. Safe food production; using good agricultural practices to ensure food safety, 2. β Increase consumer awareness in food safety, 3. Improved market access for farmers.

AFA is facilitating Kenyan Horticulture Exporters to participate in in the ongoing FRUIT LOGISTICA in Berlin. Today the AFA board Chairman, Hon. Cornelly Serem and the Director General Dr. Bruno Linyiru, OGW, paid a courtesy call to the Head of Mission in Germany, Amb. Stella Mokaya Orina. Key among the issues that were discussed are initiatives to enhance Horticulture exports to Germany, by increasing volumes of current exported products and diversifying the export product range into Germany. The need to learn from and adopt value addition technologies available in Germany were also discussed. Present in the meeting also were the Deputy Head of Mission Amb. Ambassador Kipkosgei Toroitich, Ag. Director HCD β Christine Chesaro and Trade Attache Ms.Fatuma Hashim Ali.

Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with MACFRUT. The MoU, signed by the President of MACFRUT - Renzo Piraccini and AFA DG - Dr. Bruno Linyiru OGW, aims at fostering trade between Kenya and Italy. Present in the event were the Ambassador of Italy to Kenya - H.E Roberto Natali, Chairman AFA β Hon Cornelly Serem, DG KALRO β Dr. Eliud Kireger, Director Italian Trade Agency - Giuseppe Manenti and Ag. Director Horticultural Crops Directorate β Christine Chesaro. The Team from Italy also comprised of a number of distributors of machinery, farm technologies and importers of Kenyaβs horticultural export products. These Italian companies had B2B session with Kenyaβs horticultural exporters. Under the MoU, MACFRUT has committed to establish a centre of excellence for the horticulture industry where farmers will learn on best practices in horticulture. MACFRUT will also support Kenyaβs horticulture exporters to access markets, by organizing buyer visits to Kenya and supporting Kenyan exporters to visit Italian farms and attend MACFRUT. On the other hand, the Authority will mobilize and facilitate Kenyaβs horticulture exporters to participate in MACFRUT. This joint initiative is geared towards enhancing Kenyaβs horticulture market share in Italy and promoting trade between the two countries.
