🌊 The ocean plays a central role in global prosperity: over 80% of global trade moves by sea. It also contributes critically to climate regulation, food security, and economic opportunities for coastal communities, including women and Indigenous Peoples. Yet despite these essential contributions, the ocean economy remains underdeveloped and under-regulated, as UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan emphasized. “The ocean connects us all. So must our solutions,” said Ms. Grynspan at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference held in Nice, France. Find out more ▶️ https://ow.ly/Ec3X50W8qv0 #UNOC3 #SaveOurOcean

At the 3rd UN Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, UN Trade and Development chief Rebeca Grynspan delivered a powerful call for stronger governance of the ocean economy. She underscored the ocean's central role in global prosperity, with over 80% of global trade moving by sea, alongside its critical contributions to climate regulation, food security and economic development for coastal communities, including women and Indigenous Peoples. Despite these vital contributions, Ms. Grynspan pointed out that the ocean economy remains underdeveloped and under-regulated. “There are no global or regional frameworks to advance policies, standards, research or technical cooperation,” she warned, stressing the urgent need to address these gaps. Between 1995–2020, the ocean economy grew 2.5x — outpacing global growth. It supports 100 million jobs and 600 million people, mainly in fisheries, aquaculture and tourism. It offers a path to food security and diversification — but faces threats from climate shocks, rising seas and pollution. UNCTAD calls for stronger governance, resilient infrastructure, more South-South trade and scaled-up blue finance. #UNOC3 Full report ▶️ https://ow.ly/WiSB50W3Vqj

The ocean covers 70% of Earth’s surface and carries over 80% of global trade. It supports biodiversity, regulates the climate and underpins food security, jobs and economic growth. In 2023, the ocean economy hit a record $2.2 trillion. But climate change, overfishing, pollution and underinvestment threaten our ocean, its resources and the livelihoods of over 600 million people who depend on fisheries. At the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, UNCTAD will build on momentum from the 5th UN Ocean Forum held earlier this year, which delivered 15 action points and underscored trade’s vital role in shaping a sustainable and inclusive ocean economy.
