AFM Jorah Soojay of South Africa Clinches Gold with Perfect Score at 2025 African Individual Schools Chess Championship South Africa’s AFM Jorah Soojay delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 African Individual Schools Chess Championship in Mombasa, Kenya, securing the gold medal in the U-17 Open category with a flawless 9/9 score. Soojay’s dominant run underscored his class and preparation, as he brushed aside all opposition to stand tall as the undisputed champion in his division. His compatriot, Weilun Yan, also showcased top-tier skill, earning the silver medal with an impressive 7½ points, completing a 1-2 podium finish for South Africa in the U-17 Open category. The results underline South Africa’s growing influence and depth in youth chess on the continent, particularly in the highly competitive U-17 division.
