[IN PICTURES] Makana Municipality is on a drive to improve waste collection to ensure cleanliness all around Makhanda and surrounding areas. Part of the process involves introducing wheelie bins instead of plastic bags for refuse collection. Today, 05 June 2025 the Executive Mayor of Makana Municipality Cllr Yandiswa Vara, Sarah Baartman District Municipality Council Speaker Cllr Nomhle Gaga and Makana Municipality Public Safety and Community Services MMC Cllr Thandolwethu Vayo, Ward 11 Councillor Sakhiwo Zono handed over 150 wheelie bins to residents of Ethembeni, near Extension 7, through the Upgrading of Informal Settlement Programme (UISP). The aim is to distribute wheelie bins throughout Makana to do away with plastic and reduce illegal dumping sites. Issued by the Makana Municipality Communications Office.


[IN PICTURES] Makana Local Municipality together with the Sarah Baartman District Municipality handed over 30 Temporary Residential Units (TRUs) in Makana Municipality as part of disaster management relief . Temporary Residential Units (TRUs) are temporary housing solutions constructed to provide relief to people in urban and rural areas who find themselves in emergencies as result of fire and natural disasters. Disasters necessitate the provision of urgent and immediate relief for affected families. The turn-around time for a permanent housing development is longer than 5 years on average. TRUโs offer immediate relief so that dignity and comfort can be quickly restored to victims of disasters who, in most cases have lost all their belongings. Present during the handover were Makana Municipalty Executive Mayor Cllr Yandiswa Vara, Sarah Baartman District Municipality Speaker Cllr Nomhle Gaga, Makana Municipality Public Safety and Community Services MMC Cllr Thandolwethu Vayo and Ward 10 Councillor Zodwa Cetu. The 30 TRUs were handed over to beneficiaries from wards 3, 5 and 10 in the following areas: ๐ Zolani location ๐ Nkanini ๐ Mandela Park, ๐ E Street ๐ I street Issued by the Makana Municipality Communications Office.
