A brave woman who intervened during an attempted robbery at a Telford shop has been awarded a Chief Superintendent Commendation Award. Mairi Kerin was buying chocolates at LOCO Convenience Store on Hadley Park Road on March 3, 2023, when a man came into the shop intending to take cash from the till. The man threatened shop staff, which is when Mairi, who is a black belt in karate, stepped in and chased him out the store. The 40-year-old’s quick thinking saw the wannabe thief quickly leave the store empty handed, and the staff unharmed. Recently a driver pleaded guilty to driving without due care and was given 4 points on their licence, a fine of £100 and £140 in additional costs. The driver narrowly missed two other cars while recklessly driving along a 30 mph road in Malvern, Worcestershire on the 21st June last year. Last year we had 5,811 submissions by members of the public to Operation Snap reporting incidents of dangerous driving, including dangerous overtakes, driving through red lights, close passes for cyclists and horse riders, mobile phone use and many more. We were able to take positive action in 76% of these. Op Snap continues to play an important part in changing the attitudes and behaviour of some road users and is helping to make our roads safer for all. A man has been sentenced to 12 months after he was caught driving dangerously around Dawley in Telford earlier this week. Joshua New, aged 29, of Crown Street in Dawley, caught the attention of officers at around 12.10am on Tuesday (February 25) whilst he was driving a white Nissan Juke. Officers then followed the vehicle, which is when the driver then sped off, reaching speeds of between 60mph and 80mph in a 30 zone, refusing to pull over for police. Following a pursuit by officers, the driver then dumped his vehicle in Chiltern Gardens in Dawley, before making off down Dawley High Street on foot. Officers were unable to locate the driver but following number of enquiries they were able identify New as the driver and arrest him later that day (Tuesday 25 February). New was charged with two counts of driving whilst disqualified, two counts of driving with no insurance, failing to stop for police and driving a vehicle dangerously. He was remanded in custody and appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday 26 February), where he pleaded guilty to all six charges. New was then handed a 12-month custodial sentence, a three-year and 5-month driving ban, and the judge also ordered that he must retake his driving test once the driving ban has ended.
