There is a giant gap, when it comes to practice rather than preaching anything. In the same line of thought, the concept of Vaishnavism should be respected for its glorious history. But it doesn't meet the requirements of the current time. Onion and garlic are avoided by them as they are believed to promote a Tamasic and Rajasic form of consciousness in the eater.
