DES 303: Introduction to Community Development Frequently Asked Questions This FAQ document was curated to support the successful delivery of DES 303: Introduction to Community Development at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). It addresses the most common questions and concerns raised by students during Zoom classes, WhatsApp and Telegram discussions, email correspondences, and study centre feedback. The answers are designed to provide clear guidance, reduce confusion, and help students meet course requirements with confidence. Dr. Rakiya Mamman Course Coordinator – DES 303 May 2025 THEMATIC FAQ SECTIONS 1. Course Registration & Eligibility Do I need to re-register DES 303 if I already registered in 300 level or last semester? No. If you registered previously, you do not need to register again. You are expected to complete the project and report this semester. The course is no longer showing in my e-learn portal—what should I do? Stay engaged via Telegram. You’re still eligible to participate fully and will receive all materials through the group. I’m in my final semester. Will this course delay my graduation? Yes, if you do not complete it. DES 303 is a graduation requirement. My course shows as “pending – what does that mean? It means you registered but did not complete the project or submit documentation. You must complete it this semester. 2. Course Overview & Expectations What’s the goal of DES 303? To help you apply development knowledge by planning and participating in a real-world community project. Is the course practical? Yes. It combines theory and practice with hands-on engagement in your chosen community. Is it compulsory for 400/500 level students? Yes—if you didn’t complete it in 300 level, you must complete it before graduation. Are there exams or TMAs? No traditional exams or TMAs. Assessment is based on your project and final reflection/report. 3. Participation & Discussion Forums I can’t access the course on Moodle; can I still participate? Yes. Join the Telegram group for updates, templates, and guidance. How will participation be assessed if I can’t join the forum? Telegram and Zoom engagement will count toward your participation. I joined late; what should I do now? Read pinned messages, attend the next Zoom session, and begin preparing your project idea. 4. Community Project Implementation What kind of projects can I do? Any small, meaningful, and well-documented community initiative (e.g., health campaigns, literacy drives, youth engagement). Can I do a virtual project? Yes; especially if you live abroad or face mobility challenges. Can I work alone or in a group? Yes. You may work individually or in any group size that works for your context. What documents do I need to submit? A proposal, logbook, and final reflection report (templates coming soon). Can I use a project I did last year? Yes—if it aligns with course goals and you can document it using this semester’s templates. 5. Certificate in Community Development (₦7,500 Optional) What is the certificate for? It formally recognises your competence in community development and can be used for your CV, scholarships, or service records. Is it a participation certificate? No; it reflects assessed competence and practical engagement. Is the ₦7,500 per group or per person? Per person. How and when do I pay? You will pay through NOUN’s official payment channels at the time of certificate application, after your project is completed. 6. Zoom Classes & Lecture Timing When are classes held? Currently scheduled for Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m., but a student poll is underway to determine the best time. What if I missed the last class? Summaries will be posted on Telegram. You can always catch up. Are Zoom classes compulsory? They’re strongly recommended, but not mandatory. Recordings or summaries will be available. 7. Telegram Platform & Group Access I couldn’t join the WhatsApp group. What now? We’ve moved to Telegram. All updates, links, and resources are posted there. Join here: https://t.me/+nidXusYDySE5NDU0
