*Our new leader, Councillor Julian Brazil, says that he is ‘determined to deliver the very best’ for the county’s most vulnerable children.* Councillor Brazil (Kingsbridge) made the pledge following his confirmation as the new Leader of DCC at a full council meeting yesterday (Thursday, May 22), a meeting where he also outlined other top priorities such as fixing Devon’s roads. *The Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (CCA) – the governance needed for devolved decision-making powers and funding to flow from Whitehall to local decision-makers in Devon and Torbay – is now official.* It means that decisions, previously made in Whitehall, will now be made locally on priority issues, including housing, jobs and skills, transport and the economy. *Walking and cycling projects in Devon are receiving £3.9 million of Government funding, which we’ve welcomed.* The Active Travel Funding is a share of £291 million announced nationally this week by the Government and Active Travel England (ATE), and is the largest settlement for any authority in the South West. This latest investment will support the development of around 300 miles of new footpaths and cycle lanes across the country to make walking and cycling easier and safer, while also funding cycle training for thousands of children. *There could be a big cash boost for repairing Devon’s roads and fixing potholes after county councillors backed new budget proposals today, Friday 14 February.* Our Cabinet is proposing to add an extra £4 million to the highways budget for 2025/26. In addition, £5 million could be added for services for vulnerable children and there could also be more money than planned to combat homelessness across Devon. The full council meets next Thursday (20 February) to finalise the budget for 2025/26. Find out more ⤵️ https://devon.cc/councilbudget

*Twenty five schools in Devon are among the first in the country to offer free, daily breakfast clubs, the Government has confirmed.* From April, all primary aged children in schools identified in the first phase of the Government programme will be able to access a free breakfast and at least 30 minutes of free childcare every day.
