SUMY, Ukraine — As Ukrainian troops cling to the sliver of western Russia they have occupied for six months, most are under orders not to interact with the civilians living under their control.
But a small unit in the Ukrainian military has been tasked with exactly that. These soldiers, who wear uniforms but work unarmed, visit locals to help deliver food and medical care — and to try to persuade them to abandon their long-held loyalties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
They’re also filming their outreach, even as they confront their own complicated views on how Russian civilians have experienced the war.
