*Governor Sakaja Addresses Persons Living With Disability (PLWD) Traders*
*Tuesday, 11th February 2025*
This afternoon, Nairobi Governor H.E. Sakaja Johnson addressed Persons Living With Disability (PLWD), who trade in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). This comes after Nairobi City County Government implemented plans to relocate hawkers from CBD main streets to backstreet lanes to restore order and clear walkways for pedestrians.
While addressing the traders, Governor Sakaja reiterated his commitment to restoring order and giving opportunities to all in the city, "I have heard you. We are serving all residents of Nairobi, those living with the disabilities and those physically abled. No one is preventing you from selling your wares in Nairobi, but there are areas we won't allow. We can't do things the way we used to operate. We must have order in the city. We will apply affirmative action to help you do your business," Sakaja affirmed.
Governor sakaja directed Chief Officer of Trade and Markets Jane Wangui to have a meeting with the traders tomorrow morning to come up with an amicable solution. "Your leaders will have a meeting tomorrow with the Trade and Market sector together with the Business and Hustler Opportunities and the Inspectorate and Compliance sectors to identify places to accommodate you. We have already tarmacked and cleaned backstreet lanes. We have ways to help you sell your wares within the law. When there is order in the city you will benefit more." he added.
The traders will also receive 18 wheelchairs from Nairobi City County Government to enhance their mobility as their do their business.
