France is looking to Morocco as a strategic partner—and even a potential mediator—to restore its influence in Francophone Africa, where it has faced growing hostility, according to a study published by the French geopolitical journal Conflits.
The study highlights that France has suffered a significant decline in influence across its former sphere of dominance in Africa, a loss that has severe diplomatic, security, and even economic repercussions.
