*NetOne loses over US$1M in sim card fraud*
HARARE, Zimbabwe — State-owned telecom company NetOne claims it lost more than $1 million in potential revenue due to alleged fraud by one of its dealers, Tinashe Denhere, a resident of Budiriro 5, Harare.
Denhere, accused of illegally activating mobile lines without authorization, appeared before Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa and was released on $500 bail.
Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje said Denhere purchased NetOne SIM cards between June 2022 and March 2023, fraudulently registering them under various names. He allegedly distributed the activated SIM cards, enabling unregulated calls and depriving the company of revenue.
NetOne reported the case on February 5, leading to Denhere's arrest. The company estimates its losses at US$1,337,488.
