*Attempted Robbery and Attempted Murder at Lobengula Choppies*
*Story by Caileb Proud Ncube*
Police in Bulawayo are investigating a case of attempted robbery and attempted murder that occurred on February 1, 2025, in New Lobengula.
In a remarkable display of community spirit, residents of New Lobengula banded together to confront armed robbers who stormed Choppies Supermarket around 8:10 PM. The brazen heist, which unfolded just as the store was closing, left shoppers and staff shaken, and a 59-year-old male complainant, a resident of Cowdry Park, with serious injuries.
In a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the Press and International Relations Officer for Bulawayo Province, detailed the events: "While the complainant was reconciling invoices in the office, three suspects emerged as staff members were clocking out and being searched by an undercover security officer. The first suspect fired a shot, causing panic among workers, while the second suspect fired two shots at onlookers. The first suspect then forced the complainant to the manager's booth, demanding access to the strong room. However, after the complainant explained he did not have the keys, the suspect shot him in both thighs. As more people gathered outside and began throwing stones, the suspects panicked and fled the scene empty-handed."
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as the robbers, armed with guns, fired multiple shots before making their escape on foot. Despite the danger, residents quickly sprang into action, chasing after the robbers and preventing them from making off with any loot. As the community breathes a collective sigh of relief, praise is pouring in for the brave residents who risked their lives to protect their neighborhood. Their selfless act serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community and looking out for one another.
The police are urging anyone with information regarding the arrest of the accused persons to report to the nearest police station. They are also encouraging business owners to utilize security companies to safeguard their employees and property from such criminal activities.
