*Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) diving and Asthma* *Key messages* With proper precautions, most people with asthma can participate in self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) diving, but there is inherently a greater risk for someone with asthma to dive. People with asthma may experience exercise-induced bronchospasm while submerged or barotrauma with ascent; barotrauma includes pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax, and air embolus. Asthma should be well controlled, without a recent exacerbation or current symptoms, before SCUBA diving; normal or personal best airf lowispreferred before subjects with asthma participate. Exercise-induced bronchospasm may be mitigated by using inhaled bronchodilators 30 minutes before SCUBA diving and by avoiding cold-water diving. The increase in ambient pressure with diving is proportionally greater in shallow-water dives, so caution is essential in diving, regardless of depth. *#medlung Talks 🫁*
