Mandivenga, a resident of Sentosa, allegedly promised Makuve a risk-free investment opportunity with a minimum 4 percent return, issuing promissory notes and even paying out US$110,000 in interest to keep up the charade. The scam, which ran from May 2023 to September 2024, was finally exposed when Makuve attempted to withdraw her principal investment, only to be met with evasive maneuvers from Mandivenga. With repeated attempts to recover her funds failing, Makuve turned to the authorities, leading to Mandivenga's arrest on February 12. Mandivenga's case has been remanded to February 17, pending a bail ruling. The court also heard that Mandivenga had an accomplice, Jesman Chonzi, who remains at large. To date, none of the invested funds have been recovered. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of investment scams, which can be devastating for victims. As the SEC's Office of Investor Education and Advocacy warns, investors should always be cautious of opportunities that seem too good to be true, and verify the background and registration of anyone selling or offering investments. –Herald
