*Anti-smuggling campaign recovers ZiG43m, US$200K* https://chat.whatsapp.com/BW7D5bOO26FKy4TQOnmhsE By Rutendo Nyeve, Sunday News - THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra)’s nationwide anti-smuggling campaign has so far recovered revenue of more than ZiG40 million and US$200 000 in duty and import taxes as efforts to end the illicit but rife activity persists. The campaign, a collaboration between Zimra and different stakeholders has significantly disrupted smuggling networks and boosted Government revenue while promoting the local manufacturing industry that was being weighed down by smuggled imports. Responding to questions from Sunday News, Zimra corporate affairs executive Mr Gladman Njanji, said the operation, which spans the entire country was intercepting smuggled goods at borders, ports and other entry points. “Total collections to date for the whole project amount to ZiG43 153 547,35 and USD213 465,41. The operation is running countrywide and the figures given above cover duty and import taxes collected from goods intercepted across the nation,” he said. He said seized goods are subjected to strict procedures, including the collection of duty and fines, public auctions, or destruction, depending on the nature of the offence. “Intercepted goods are subjected to various procedures. Where the owners come forth, duty and fines are collected before the goods are released to the owners. For serious offences, goods may be forfeited to the State and disposed of by public auction. Where the goods are banned or prohibited, they are declared forfeit and destroyed without compensation,” he said. The anti-smuggling campaign has been rolled out across the country, with Zimra working closely with law enforcement agencies, various Ministries and other stakeholders. The co-ordinated effort has ensured that no region is left unchecked, making it increasingly difficult for smugglers to operate. Zimra Commissioner-General, Ms Faith Mazani recently praised the campaign as a major milestone in the fight against illegal trade. “The success of this operation demonstrates our commitment to protecting the economy and ensuring that everyone pays their fair share,” she said. “We will not tolerate any form of smuggling or tax evasion.” Ms Mazani also called on the public to play an active role in the fight against smuggling. “We urge citizens to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. This is not just Zimra’s fight, it is a collective effort to safeguard our economy,” she added. As the campaign continues, Zimra has pledged to intensify its efforts by leveraging advanced technology and intelligence-gathering techniques. The authority has also committed to strengthening partnerships with regional and international organisations to combat cross-border smuggling. Ms Mazani said the success of the anti-smuggling campaign underscores the Government’s resolve to curb illegal trade and foster a culture of transparency and accountability. With millions already recovered and more operations underway, Zimbabwe is sending a clear message to smugglers that the law will catch up with them. Sunday News
