On Manipur’s Statehood Day, it is vital to acknowledge its complex history.
Inner Manipur was annexed by India in 1949, while Outer Manipur, historically governed by Kuki chieftainship, was incorporated in 1972 without Kuki consent. Despite decades of coexistence, true integration has never been achieved. This historical reality reinforces the validity of the Kuki demand for separate administration, particularly in light of the Biren government’s repressive policies.
