February’s Uncomfortable Heat Followed by a Sudden Cold Wave:
This February has been quite unusual in terms of weather. The month started with uncomfortable heat, making it feel as if winter had already ended. But just when people began adjusting to the warmer conditions, temperatures took a sharp dive, dropping to as low as 1°C in some places. The reason? A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) passing through North India, bringing a sudden chill across both the Himalayan plains and the vast northern plains.
From Unexpected Warmth to Freezing Cold:
Normally, February is a transition month where winter slowly fades and temperatures rise gradually. But this year, the rise was too quick, and the warmth felt more like early summer than the end of winter. Many places saw unusually high daytime temperatures, making people pack away their winter clothes earlier than usual.
Then came the Western Disturbance, bringing cold winds, moisture, and a sudden drop in temperatures. The impact was felt across a large region, from Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and even parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The temperature dip was so drastic that some places recorded near-freezing levels near Shivalik ranges, something unexpected for mid-February.
This unusual winter warmth wasn't limited to February alone. Even in January, Barmer, Rajasthan, broke 34 year's old daytime temperature record for the month on 30 Jan when day temp touched 34.4°C 😬, which is highest after 1991.
