Talking behind someone’s back, also known as backbiting (ghibah), is strongly discouraged in Islam. Allah describes it in the Qur’an as akin to “eating the flesh of your dead brother,” an act that is abhorrent and disgusting (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:12).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) further explained ghibah as mentioning something about someone in their absence that they would dislike if they heard it. He emphasized, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak what is good or remain silent.” (Bukhari & Muslim).
When tempted to backbite, remember:
• You wouldn’t want others to spread your faults.
• Protecting someone’s honor earns Allah’s protection of yours.
• Use your words to uplift, not harm.
True strength is controlling your tongue and maintaining a pure heart. Avoid backbiting and strive for kindness, even when others are not around.
