1. *MNANGAGWA ADVISOR ADMITS THERE IS INFIGHTING IN ZANU PF*
In a candid admission, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s advisor, Paul Tungwarara, has criticized internal factions within the ruling Zanu PF party who have been using social media to attack the party leader. Tungwarara made these remarks during the launch of the Harare Province Presidential War Veterans Fund at the Zanu PF headquarters on Tuesday.
While addressing the gathering, Tungwarara responded directly to those he believes are attempting to sow division within the party, saying, “We will not be swayed by those attempting to use divide and rule tactics through social media.” This statement reflects growing tensions within the party as some factions seek to undermine Mnangagwa’s leadership.
Tungwarara also emphasized the strength and unity of those loyal to the president, stating, “We know their agenda, it’s too narrow and we are unstoppable.” His words indicate a strong resolve among Mnangagwa’s supporters to resist efforts aimed at destabilizing the party from within.
The occasion was marked by Tungwarara’s formal handover of a US$150,000 allocation to the Zanu PF War Veterans League, led by Douglas Mahiya, reinforcing his role as Mnangagwa’s investment advisor. The funds are intended to support the war veterans, a key base of support for the ruling party.
Tungwarara’s comments reveal not only the internal strife facing Zanu PF but also his determination to project an image of party unity in the face of growing divisions. Despite the public infighting, he maintains confidence in the leadership’s ability to weather the storm and remain “unstoppable.” *_-ZimEye_*
2. *STATE FORCED TO WITHDRAW FRAUD CASE AFTER FAILING TO LOCATE CDE GEZA*
The State was on Wednesday forced to withdraw charges against former Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) former boss, Basil Nyabadza, accused of defrauding war veteran Blessed Geza of US$1,3 million in a land deal.
The withdrawal before plea came after State’s failure to locate Geza who is currently in hiding following police announcements that he is wanted over a slew of criminal charges, including Insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and theft.
The Investigating officer, Hillary Mazhekete told court that he went to Geza’s last known address intending to serve him with summons to attend court and give his testimony but could not locate him.
In an affidavit tendered before Harae regional magistrate Donald Ndirowei, Mazhekete also said Geza was not reachable on his mobile phone.
The magistrate who was presiding over the matter Tilda Mazhande had also recused herself citing personal reasons.
Ndirowei granted an application of withdrawal of the charges by prosecutor Anesu Chirenje ruling that the matter will continue by way of summons.
It is state’s case that October 29, 2020, Geza bought a piece of land from Nyabadza measuring 423504 hectares for US$1 362 000.
The state alleges that Geza was granted sole authority to subdivide, develop and sell the piece of land.
When the agreement of sale was done, Nyabadza allegedly misrepresented to Geza that the piece of land had title deeds and promised to avail the document in a month, but failed to do so.
The court heard that while Geza was in the process of obtaining subdivision permits for the land from the department of physical planning in Mashonaland West province, he discovered that Nyabadza had sold the same land to Velda Estates.
It is further alleged that Geza engaged Nyabadza hoping for an amicable solution only to discover that the agreement of sale had been cancelled without his knowledge. *_-ZimEye_*
3. *BLESSED MHLANGA’S ARREST A BLOW TO HUMAN RIGHTS AND PRESS FREEDOM: CHAMISA*
Former MDC and CCC president Nelson Chamisa has condemned the arrest of Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) senior journalist, Blessed “Dhara” Mhlanga, by police on Monday.
Mhlanga was remanded in custody on Tuesday by Harare Magistrate Farai Gwatima, pending a ruling on his bail application, which is set for Thursday.
The journalist faces two charges under Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly transmitting data messages that incite violence.
Both charges relate to “public violence” and stem from interviews Mhlanga conducted with Blessed Geza, an outspoken liberation war veteran and Zanu PF central committee member, on January 27 and February 11, 2025.
Chamisa has described Mhlanga’s arrest as a flagrant violation of fundamental freedoms, human rights, press freedom, and democracy.
*He said:*
The arrest of journalist Blessed Mhlanga is a flagrant violation of fundamental freedoms and human rights.
This arrest is an affront to civilisation, press freedom and democracy.
Journalism is the oxygen that thrives society. A free press is the lifeblood of a progressive and functional modern society.
Section 61 of Zimbabwe’s Constitution guarantees freedom of the media; this right must be upheld! Zimbabwean wildlife safaris
The first indicator that those in government have turned against the people is in the targeting of journalists as conveyors of information and news. Journalism as a profession must be protected. *_-Pindula_*
4. *SMUGGLED AND SUBSTANDARD GOODS DESTROYED IN CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL TRADE*
Huge quantities of counterfeit, substandard and underweight products were destroyed at the Geo Pomona Waste Management site in Harare as part of an ongoing crackdown by the Anti-Smuggling Taskforce.
The destruction of the goods was aimed at protecting consumers from potentially harmful products.
Speaking during the event, Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) director Mr Kudakwashe Mudereri said they were concerned about the influx of illegal and counterfeit goods on the informal market.
“We have seen a sudden proliferation of counterfeit and substandard products, expired goods, and underweight products flooding the market,” Mr Mudereri said.
“This operation was conducted to safeguard our consumers. Many of these products pose serious health risks.
“We have partnered with Geo Pomona to ensure that all products that do not meet required standards are destroyed so they do not pose a danger to consumers,” he said.
Harare Metropolitan Province’s Anti-Smuggling Taskforce coordinator, Mr Tawedzera Muwani assured the public that confiscated goods will not be sold or used.
“This is just the beginning,” Mr Muwani said. “Smuggled and illegal goods, including those that are substandard, will be destroyed. We do not take them home, and we do not allow them to re-enter the market.”
He acknowledged the collaborative effort among various Government entities in combating smuggling and counterfeit trade.
“We extend our gratitude to all the Government entities we have worked with, including the City of Harare, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, CPC and ZRP,” he said.
“By destroying these goods, we are showing our commitment to eradicating illegal and substandard products from the market.” *_-Chronicle_*
5. *NEW ZEALAND OFFERING PERMANENT RESIDENCY TO PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS – HERE IS HOW TO APPLY*
The New Zealand government has announced that primary teachers will be added to the Straight to Residence Pathway under the Green List. This change, effective from March 26, 2025, will allow qualified primary and intermediate school teachers to apply for residency immediately upon securing a job offer in New Zealand, even from overseas.
Previously, primary teachers were on the Work to Residence Pathway, which required them to work in New Zealand for two years before becoming eligible for residency. This new policy aims to attract more skilled educators to the country, particularly in regions like Auckland and Northland, where teacher shortages are most acute.
*What is the Straight to Residence Pathway?*
The Straight to Residence Pathway is a streamlined immigration process designed to attract highly skilled professionals to New Zealand. By adding primary teachers to the Green List, the government is prioritizing the education sector and ensuring that schools have access to qualified educators to meet the needs of students across the country.
This pathway allows eligible teachers to bypass the traditional two-year waiting period and apply for residency as soon as they receive a job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer. This change not only benefits teachers but also strengthens the education system by addressing critical staffing shortages.
*Why This Change Matters*
The decision to include primary teachers in the Straight to Residence Pathway reflects the government’s commitment to improving the quality of education in New Zealand. With a growing number of students and a limited pool of local teachers, this policy is a proactive step to ensure that every child has access to quality education.
By making it easier for overseas-trained teachers to relocate to New Zealand, the government also opens doors for cultural exchange and diversity in classrooms. This move is expected to positively impact students and the broader community.
*How to Apply for Residency as a Primary Teacher*
If you’re a qualified primary or intermediate school teacher interested in moving to New Zealand, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the application process:
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Before applying, ensure you meet the following criteria:
• You must hold a recognized teaching qualification for primary or intermediate levels.
• Your qualifications must meet the standards set by the Teaching Council of New Zealand.
• You need a valid job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer.
Step 2: Secure a Job Offer
Start by searching for teaching vacancies through accredited schools and recruitment agencies in New Zealand. To hire overseas teachers, employers must be accredited under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) system.
Additionally, you may be eligible for an Overseas Relocation Grant of up to NZ$10,000 to assist with moving expenses and make your transition to New Zealand smoother.
Step 3: Apply for Residency
From March 26, 2025, you can submit your residency application directly to Immigration New Zealand. Ensure you have all the necessary documents ready, including:
• Your job offer letter from an accredited employer.
• Proof of your teaching qualifications.
• Registration with the Teaching Council of New Zealand.
• Medical and police clearance certificates.
Step 4: Prepare for Your Move
Once your visa is approved, it’s time to plan your relocation! Research housing options, understand the cost of living, and explore school placements if you’re moving with your family. Connecting with other teachers who have successfully made the move can provide valuable insights and tips for settling into your new life in New Zealand.
*Benefits of Teaching in New Zealand*
New Zealand offers a high quality of life, a supportive education system, and a welcoming community for teachers. Here are some of the key benefits of pursuing a teaching career in New Zealand:

• Professional Development: Teachers have access to ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance their skills. *_-iHarare_*
6. *ZIMBABWE LOSES US$5 BILLION TO MONETARY, FOREX POLICY CHAOS: WORLD BANK*
The World Bank (WB) has revealed that Zimbabwe lost over US$4,5 billion, or 2,5% of its gross domestic product (GDP), between 2020 and 2023 due to distortions in its monetary and exchange rate policies.
The biggest losses, according to the global lender’s statement released on Wednesday, stemmed from inflation-related tax losses (US$1,4 billion), informalisation (US$1,2 billion), and customs duty foregone (US$580 million).
“In the absence of such distortions, tax revenue in 2023 could have been as high as 18,9% of GDP, compared to the 14,6% of GDP observed,” the bank said, citing its new Zimbabwe Public Finance Review (PFR) report, also launched on Wednesday.
“Tax revenue can be increased in a way that improves both efficiency and pro-poor outcomes. To increase tax revenue, Zimbabwe’s 2024 Budget announced various reforms to broaden the tax base, including removing some VAT (Value-Added Tax) exemptions.
“While these reforms can lead to revenue gains, they may also hurt poor households. Compensatory mechanisms can restore the impact of VAT reforms on poor households, potentially at a fraction of the new VAT collections.”
Other potential reforms to raise revenue include streamlining corporate tax incentives and strengthening mining tax policy, the statement highlighted.
In addition, the report discusses options to better align public-health excise taxes on alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages with World Health Organisation standards, as well as reorganise the newly proposed wealth tax.
Considerable benefits may be derived from the newly introduced Tax and Revenue Administration System. Estimates suggest such policies could structurally raise tax collection by between 3,1% to 3,8% of GDP.
“Public spending can be streamlined, resulting in greater value-for-money,” the lender said.
There are also opportunities to enhance the efficiency of public spending, procurement, and public investments through improved evaluation systems and the use of e-procurement.
“Finally, there is a need to improve targeting of social protection through a ‘social registry’. Jointly, this could lead to potential savings of 1,1–1,2% of GDP, out of which around 0,15% could be allocated to compensate low-income households,” the WB said.
The WB stated that these policy reforms would lead to a significant adjustment in the fiscal balance, resulting in a fiscal surplus. This could enable Zimbabwe’s debt service-to-revenue ratio to peak in 2025 and thereafter decline rapidly, potentially reducing overall debt.
The PFR seeks to support the government’s task of fiscal consolidation by identifying policy options to help rationalise expenditure and increase revenue mobilisation.
This can help create fiscal space and move Zimbabwe onto a more sustainable fiscal pathway.
In turn, prudent fiscal policy will help stabilise the macroeconomic environment by providing an anchor for price and exchange rate stability, bolstering economic growth and job creation. *_-The Independent_*
7. *NKAYI VILLAGERS AND SCHOOL HEAD CLASH OVER 6% PASS RATE*
The Nkayi community is up in arms with the headmistress at Mpumelelo High School whom it accuses of being disrespectful and arrogant whenever they complain about the poor pass rate at the school.
The villagers blame the head’s attitude for the 6% pass rate recorded at the school in last year’s Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) examinations.
The school is located in ward 22, Nkayi South and has a catchment area of nine villages and five feeder primary schools — Mtshatshane, Katasa, Zenka, Mabayi and Mdlawuzweni.
The villagers told Southern Eye that school head Vongai Masunda was allegedly running down the school.
School development committee (SDC) chairperson Doreen Sunduza accused Masunda of not consulting before making critical decisions.
“She [school head] sidelines and undermines the SDC,” she said.
“She disrespects the local traditional leadership labelling them uneducated. Whenever parents air their grievances, she lifts the tribal card and plays victim instead of finding ways to improve the school.”
Sunduza also accused Masunda of unilaterally raising school fees leading to clashes with the community.
“The issue went as far as the district office and it was nullified. Then came the 2024 Zimsec O’ level examination pass rate hitting its all-time low of 6%, second from bottom in the district,” she said.
Village head Dumisani Sibanda described the school head as arrogant.
“She disrespects and undermines the local traditional leadership and community at large. She runs the school like a private entity, does not engage parents, this is shown by attendance statistics at school meetings,” he said.
He said they tried to engage the ministry since 2023, with little success.
“We were disrespected and labelled uneducated. We proceeded to the district office and met the district schools inspector identified as Matshazi. He accompanied us back to Mpumelelo and we had a meeting together with the school administration,” Sibanda said.
“We had a resolution to change the old SDC committee the following week and also discussed the issue of school fees. Nothing fruitful came out of the meeting as the headmistress threatened to unleash anti-riot police on the people and openly declared that she was untouchable, gloating that whatever we say will not work.
“All we want is for our school to produce good results, we want service delivery, we don’t know whether we don’t have the right to demand service delivery as parents.”
Another village head Ndabazabo Ncube said the school, with more than 600 learners, had a library, computer laboratory, science laboratory and classrooms that needed minor repairs, doors and windows.
“The library was fully equipped. I hear there are no longer any books in the library. The science lab also faces a shortage of chemicals for children to do experiments,” Ncube said.
“As the leaders of this community, we wish our school to improve and we wish to see children coming from all corners of the country. We want our school to be ranked among the top in the district both academically and infrastructure-wise.”
Nkayi Community Parliament Speaker Moses Ncube appealed to authorities to resolve the issue for the good of learners.
“The authorities need to provide counselling to the staff members who are said to have become indifferent to members of the community who demand answers to the perceived low performance by the school.
“As a former teacher at Mpumelelo High School, I experienced that and we had no problem at all because there was a healthy balance in the cultural outlook of teachers deployed to the school. Leadership is a positive influence and I think that is where the magic lies.”
Masunda declined to comment referring Southern Eye to the district schools inspector.
Nkayi district schools inspector Temba Ndhlovu also refused to comment saying the issue has not been reported to his office.
“If they [villagers] have issues they are supposed to bring them, as far as I know, there is nothing of that sort on my table,” he said. *_-Southern Eye_*
8. *NORTH KOREA STEALS $1.5 BILLION AS IT PULLS OFF WORLD’S BIGGEST EVER HEIST*
State-backed North Korean hackers have stolen $1.5 billion (£1.2 billion) of cryptocurrency in the largest heist in history.
Agents from Pyongyang were able to breach the systems of Dubai-based exchange Bybit to steal the digital coin Ether, according to security analysts.
The hackers stole more cryptocurrency in one attack than all the funds stolen by North Korean cyber criminals in 2024, when the rogue state’s cyber attackers made off with around $1.3 billion in digital coins, according to cryptocurrency analysts Chainalysis.
The $1.5 billion total eclipses the largest known bank theft of all time, when Saddam Hussein stole $1bn from the Iraqi central bank ahead of the Iraq War in 2003.
The record haul comes as Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme leader, turns to elite units of computer hackers to prop up the Communist dictatorship’s failing economy.
Chainalysis said the attack served as a “stark reminder” of the advanced tactics employed by the country’s hackers. As well as technical skills, North Korean hackers are adept at what is known as “social engineering”: manipulating people to do what they want in order to pave the way for a heist.
This can involve developing relationships with targets over email and digital chats, sometimes over a period of months.
Cyber security experts believe North Korea’s notorious Lazarus Group are the masterminds behind the latest attack. The group has terrorised Western businesses for more than a decade with a series of cyber breaches that have caused billions of dollars in losses.
Elliptic, a cryptocurrency analysis business, said the hacking group was the “most sophisticated and well-resourced launderer of cryptoassets in existence”.
The group is believed to be part of North Korea’s intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau. It has been linked to past attacks including the hack of Sony in 2014, when the group leaked private emails from executives in an attempt to block the release of the comedy film The Interview, which lampooned North Korea’s supreme leader.
Lazarus Group has also been blamed for a near-$1 billion heist from a Bangladeshi bank in 2016 and the global Wannacry cyber attack, which knocked hundreds of thousands of computers offline with damaging ransomware, including NHS systems.
While Pyongyang once relied on its elite hacking cadres to conduct espionage or steal trade secrets, increasingly they have been employed as a weapon of economic warfare to bolster the coffers of the heavily sanctioned regime.
“North Korea started using cyber attacks for espionage, stealing R&D and intellectual property,” said Rafe Pilling, of the cyber security company Secureworks. “Subsequently, they have really capitalised on it as a source of revenue.”
A Soviet-style focus on science and technology has created a “whole education pipeline” for future cyber experts, said Mr Pilling. North Korean science prodigies are identified from a young age, before being pushed to compete in international maths and programming competitions.
The country’s hackers are prolific. In 2024, they made off with approximately 61% of the $2.2 billion of cryptocurrency stolen globally, according to Chainalysis. Including last week’s attack, North Korean hackers have stolen upwards of $6bn in cryptocurrency over the last decade.
The thefts offer a substantial boost to the nation’s beleaguered economy and help support its military spending, including its ballistic missile programme. North Korea’s GDP is estimated at just $28 billion and it is heavily reliant on agriculture and trade with its main ally, China.
While most members of Lazarus Group are unknown, the US has issued indictments against several North Korean military figures it believes are linked to the group.
North Korea relies on multiple different hacking techniques, ranging from uncovering so-called “zero day” hacks that can break into IT using previously unknown flaws to using fake remote-working contractors to infiltrate US companies.
Cryptocurrency analysis companies including Arkham Intelligence and Elliptic identified Lazarus Group as the likely Bybit hackers. Researchers were able to trace the digital wallets that were used by the hackers to quickly launder their funds, which are recorded on the “blockchain” technology used by the cryptocurrency industry.
Some of the funds moved through wallets believed to be associated with past North Korean hacking attacks. TRM, a cyber security company, said there were “substantial overlaps observed between addresses controlled by the Bybit hackers and those linked to prior North Korean thefts”.
The North Korean hackers were able to steal the huge crypto haul through a multi-layered and long-planned attack, according to Chainalysis. Hackers gained access to Bybit’s internal systems using so-called “phishing” email, which prompted an employee to input their login details to a seemingly legitimate website that was actually compromised.
The hackers were then able to gain access to a so-called “cold wallet” – a supposedly secure cryptocurrency storage device that holds coins offline and away from the internet. When Bybit came to transfer funds from the offline wallet to its online systems, the hackers sabotaged the transfer and stole the funds.
Within minutes the hackers had fed them through a series of other wallets and digital currency exchanges, attempting to obscure their origin by trading them for other coins or passing them through trading houses with no customer checks.
The nature of the cryptocurrency industry, which is virtually unregulated, has made it a haven for cyber attackers to launder funds. Chainalysis said it had worked with exchanges to freeze $40 million in funds stolen from Bybit, but far more remained unaccounted for.
North Korea’s hackers are showing no signs of slowing down. According to Chainalysis, its attackers are getting “better and faster at massive exploits”.
North Korea’s cyber prowess allows it to be a “major player even if in the real world they are highly isolated,” Mr Pilling said.
Bybit has said it has “more than enough” assets to cover its losses and insisted the hack was an “isolated incident”. *_-The Independent_*
9. *OK ZIMBABWE FIRES TOP MANAGEMENT; ROPES IN FORMER CEO ZIREVA IN TURNAROUND STRATEGY*
Listed retail giant, OK Zimbabwe has fired its top management with immediate effect in a development which has seen former CEO Willard Zireva bouncing back.
This comes shortly after the top retailer’s operations hit an all-time low, with most supermarket shelves running empty. The situation has since improved following a bailout extended to the supermarket chain by its key partners.
On the back of the recovery, OK Zimbabwe announced that it had sacked its top three managers.
“With immediate effect, the company announces the following changes: the conclusion of voluntary separation agreements with the following Directors; CEO Maxen Phillip Karombo; Chief Financial Officer – Phillimon Mushosho; and Supply Chain Director Knox Mupaya,” the company secretary Margaret Munyuru said in a statement.
The management board also moved to reappoint its retired old guard back into office who includes, CEO Willard Vimbai Zireva, CFO Alex Edgar Siyavora and Supply Chain Director, Muzvidzwa Richard Chingaira.
“The board would like to acknowledge the outgoing Executive team for their service through this challenging period, and to welcome back the team reposed with the remit to stabilize and turn the business around over the next six months whilst the company engages in the process to identify the executive replacements,” added Munyuru. *_-NewZimbabwe_*
10. *ZIMBABWEAN BUSINESSMAN SHOT IN DEAD IN SOUTH AFRICA WHILST IN HIS FERRARI*
Maxwell Mlangeni, a prominent businessman from Zimbabwe was shot in Witbank South Africa. Mlangeni built a thriving empire in logistics and real estate.
Known for his sharp business acumen, he expanded operations across Zimbabwe and South Africa. Many admired his relentless work ethic and generous philanthropy.
Despite his success, he maintained a low profile. However, his life ended tragically in a fatal shooting in Witbank, South Africa, sending shockwaves through business circles.
On February 25, 2025, a deadly ambush claimed Mlangeni’s life outside Today’s Destiny Logistics on Bethal Road, Witbank. Reports indicate that he was driving a white Ferrari when gunmen opened fire.
Multiple bullet holes shattered the windshield, hinting at a targeted hit. Witnesses described the terrifying moment, saying the attack was swift and ruthless.
Authorities arrived quickly, but Mlangeni had already succumbed to his injuries. Police continue investigating, but no arrests have been made.
The murder of the Zimbabwe businessman shot dead in Witbank raises several questions. Was it a business rivalry, a personal vendetta, or an organized crime act? Close associates suspect foul play, considering Mlangeni’s high-profile status.
His assassination has reignited debates on safety for foreign business owners in South Africa. Meanwhile, tributes continue pouring in, celebrating his legacy and contributions to both Zimbabwe and South Africa.
His family and business partners now face the daunting task of carrying forward his empire while seeking justice. *_-iHarare_*
11. *RUGBY COMMUNITY IN TEARS AS AARON JANI DIES*
The Zimbabwe rugby fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Zimbabwe international and administrator Aaron Jani.
He was 55.
Jani on Wednesday succumbed to colon cancer which he had been battling against for nearly a decade.
“Yes, he had not been well for some time,” said Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Losson Mtongwiza.
“He had been battling cancer for about a decade now but in the last three or so months he seemed to be in a lot of pain.
“It is indeed a sad note for our sport losing a person, character and passionate son like Aaron.”
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as the Union has decided to give the Jani family some time to process his death. *_-Herald_*
12. *FEMALE COP RELEASES PRISONER FOR AN OVERNIGHT AFFAIR AT HOTEL*
A former police officer, Natasha Conneely, has admitted to removing the GPS tag from the ankle of a convicted burglar to facilitate a night of passion at a Leeds hotel. The shocking revelation has raised concerns over the abuse of power and the integrity of law enforcement officers.
Conneely, who was part of the offender management unit for Bedfordshire Police, resigned from her position following the discovery of her inappropriate relationship in May 2023. Her actions included tampering with police systems to cover up the movements of the burglar, whose identity has not been disclosed.
*A secret affair unveiled*
The scandal unraveled when messages exchanged between Conneely and the burglar were discovered. These messages revealed that she had removed his electronic tag a month earlier, allowing him to visit her home undetected. She had also manipulated police databases to ensure his location remained hidden from authorities.
The pair’s relationship culminated in a clandestine night together at a hotel in Leeds in June 2023. During this encounter, Conneely had cut off the GPS tag to avoid detection, demonstrating a clear breach of trust and professional conduct.
*Betraying the Badge*
Following an investigation by Bedfordshire Police’s Professional Standards Department, Conneely was charged with corrupt or other improper exercise of police powers and privileges. At a hearing in November 2023, her behavior was deemed gross misconduct, violating standards of discreditable conduct, honesty, and integrity.
The disciplinary panel concluded that had she not resigned, Conneely would have been dismissed. She has since been barred from ever returning to policing, a move welcomed by both law enforcement officials and the public.
*A pattern of abuse in policing*
This latest incident adds to a growing list of cases where police and correctional officers have abused their authority to engage in inappropriate relationships with those under their supervision:
i. Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women (New Jersey, USA): Officers Kevin Brodie, William Jimenez, and David Clappison were all prosecuted in the 1990s for engaging in sexual relationships with inmates.
ii. Medomsley Detention Centre (England): Officers Neville Husband and Leslie Johnson were jailed for sexually abusing young inmates over several decades.
iii. Federal Medical Center in Lexington (Kentucky, USA): Officer Jacob Salcido was sentenced for engaging in sexual acts with three inmates, demonstrating a severe abuse of power.
iv. Northern State Prison (Newark, New Jersey, USA): Officer Tasheena Majors was charged with sexual assault after having a relationship with a male inmate.
v. California Women’s Prisons: Numerous correctional officers were found to have exploited female inmates sexually, often coercing them into relationships.
*Calls for reform*
This incident underscores the urgent need for stronger oversight and accountability in law enforcement and correctional institutions. Experts are calling for enhanced training, stricter vetting processes, and more robust reporting mechanisms to prevent such abuses of power.
A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police stated, “The actions of Ms. Conneely are a grave betrayal of the public’s trust. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity within our ranks.”
The case is expected to lead to further internal reviews and possible changes to policies surrounding the management of offenders and the conduct of police officers. *_-ZimEye_*
13. *2 POLICE OFFICERS DEMAND US$60 WEEKLY BRIBE FROM TRANSPORT OPERATOR*
The Chinhoyi Magistrates Court has convicted Desire Mangombe (30) and Macdonald Tapesa (32), both traffic officers from ZRP Chinhoyi Traffic, for criminal abuse of office.
They were found guilty of demanding a US$60 weekly bribe from a transport operator in exchange for allowing free passage.
From January 2022, the officers allegedly extorted bribes from Tafadzwa Bvunzawabaya, a manager at Wolfspack Transport Services.
On September 15, 2022, a team from Police General Headquarters Harare set up a trap operation using marked US dollar notes.
The officers accepted the bribe at their station, leading to their arrest and the recovery of the trap money.
Both officers were convicted under Section 174(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] and sentenced to 490 hours of community service.
In a separate case, the Harare Magistrates’ Court has convicted two Mbare police officers for corruption.
Naume Dube (31) and Victoria Shonhiwa (36), constables at Mbare Police Station, were found guilty of criminal abuse of duty. On March 11, 2024, they were caught soliciting US$1 from every motorist passing through the station’s main gate.
After receiving a tip-off, officers from the Internal Investigations Department set up surveillance and observed the two officers accepting bribes.
Dube was found with US$80 in her shirt pockets, while Shonhiwa had US$40. A list of motor vehicle registration numbers was also recovered.
The officers were arrested and handed over to the Police Anti-Corruption Unit. The US$120 and the list of vehicles were presented in court as evidence. *_-Pindula_*
14. *BULAWAYO SERIAL THIEF (AGED 24) JAILED FOR 15 YEARS AFTER STEALING GOODS WORTH US$1 MILLION WITHIN 7 MONTHS*
A 24-year-old Bulawayo man, Laga Dube, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of 43 counts of theft, committed between August 2023 and March 2024, involving property worth approximately US$1 million.
Dube, of Upper Rangemore, pleaded not guilty, but Western Commonage magistrate Mr Vakai Douglas Chikwekwe found him guilty based on overwhelming evidence.
However, Dube will serve only 10 years, as five years of his sentence were suspended on the condition of good behaviour.
According to State prosecutor Mr Milton Moyo, Dube targeted 43 vehicles across Bulawayo, using various methods to break in.
“The thefts involved breaking into 43 separate motor vehicles, where Dube stole mobile phones, laptops, cash, wheels, and other valuables,” said Mr Moyo.
Dube reportedly used different techniques, including smashing windows and picking locks, to gain access to the vehicles.
In the first count, which occurred in August 2023, he stole property worth US$420, with US$400 later recovered.
From count two to count 30, the total stolen property value was US$83 590, with less than half recovered.
Between count 31 and 43, Dube stole valuables from 13 motor vehicles, with the total value of stolen goods being substantial.
The crime spree came to light in March 2024, when one of the victims reported the theft. Further investigations linked Dube to the series of break-ins, leading to his arrest and conviction.
With his criminal record spanning 43 cases, Dube’s 10-year prison term serves as a warning to would-be offenders. *_-Chronicle_*
15. *CHIREDZI STUDENT (AGED 14) CREATES THERMAL COOKER USING KAYLITES*
A Form 3 pupil at Chiredzi Government High School, Dorcas Zemayema (14) has created an insulated slow cooker as part of her heritage based curriculum.
An insulation slow cooker/ thermal cooker is an insulated box that keeps food warm and cooking without needing a heat source. It is a simple, energy efficient way to cook food.
School head, Victor Zvada confirmed the project to The Mirror. He said Dorcas’s cooker was created using kaylites and polyester clothes.
Dorcas’s Chemistry teacher Manzini Mubengo who helped her with the project said the cooker preserves heat for almost 8 hours.
“One of our learners has come up with an insulation slow cooker as part of her Heritage Based Curriculum where learners are supposed to come up with projects focusing on producing goods and services useful to the economy ,”said Zvada.
Zvada added that Dorcas skipped Form 2 due to her high grades and is a promising academic starlet.
Dorcas said that she was inspired to come up with the project after realising that the cooker reduces pollution, saves electricity and avoids deforestation.
“I was inspired to come up with this project because the insulation slow cooker saves electricity as you only heat the pot for 30 minutes on the electric or gas stove before placing it in the slow cooker. It also saves deforestation as there will be no need for firewood. The cooker can be used for a long time before it starts losing heat,” she said.
She said that she chose kaylites because they are readily available in the streets and biodegradable.
Mubengo said that the cooker can be used even when travelling and is user friendly.
“This insulation slow cooker preserves heat for almost 8 hours and the cooker is user friendly, you can place your pot inside the cooker even while travelling as the bag does not allow heat to escape.
“This is part of their heritage based curriculum, she was supposed to come up with a project and I assisted her,” said Mubengo. *_-The Mirror_*
