President Donald Trump incorrectly interpreted data shared by Elon Musk when he misleadingly claimed on Feb. 18 that “millions and millions of people over 100 years old” may be receiving improper benefits from Social Security. In fact, only about 89,000 people aged 99 or older received benefits from Social Security last year.
We have reposted this story due to a correction. The full story now includes this correction:
Correction, Feb. 22: We added additional comments Trump made on Feb. 18. He questioned how many of those listed in the Social Security database over the age of 100 were actually being improperly paid benefits. He then speculated it was “maybe millions.” We also changed our characterization of his remarks from false to misleading, making clear that he said “millions” may be receiving improper benefits not that they are receiving them. We regret the omission.
