YOUR HEALTH with Hazel Simango VESICOVAGINAL FISTULA (VVF) An abnormal connection between the bladder and vagina, allowing urine to leak into the vagina. It is a serious health issue that affects many pregnant women and girls, especially in developing countries. Predisposing factors 1.Infection-of the pelvis, such as pelvic inflammation disease (PID),can cause tissue damage. 2. Injury of the pelvis-trauma, for example, car accident or fall, may also damage the pelvis leading to VVF. 3.Cancer-pelvic tissue damage due to radiation therapy or surgical treatment of cancer can lead to VVF. 4. Surgery complications from surgeries such as hysterectomy, ceasarian section, or any pelvic surgery . 5.Childbirth-prolonged labour, obstructed labour, or instrument delivery. 6. Lack of access to quality health care-in areas with limited health care resources, women may not receive adequate care during delivery, increasing the risk . 7. Young age-pregnant girls under the age of 18 are at higher risk of developing VVF due to their smaller pelvis size . 8. Poor nutrition and socioeconomic status-women from disadvantaged background s may be more likely to experience VVF due to malnutrition, inadequate health care, and other socioeconomic factors. Signs and symptoms a). Pain when passing urine due to irritation of the vaginal tissue. b). Frequent urination-women with VVF may experience frequent urination or a strong urge to urinate. c). Continuous urine leakage- urine leaks into the vagina causing constant wetness. d). Vaginal discharge-may experience vaginal discharge or odor. Prevention 1. Proper prenatal care - regular prenatal care can help prevent complications during childbirth. 2. Safe delivery practices-proper use and timely intervention - can help. 3. Pelvic floor exercises - regular exercises can help strengthen the muscles. 4. Avoiding early marriage and pregnancy - delaying marriage and pregnancy until the age of 18 or older can reduce the risk of VVF. 5. Family planning - family planning and child spacing. 6. Proper nutrition and good hygiene. 7. pregnant women to deliver at health facilities. Complications * Emotional distress - women with VVF may develop anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. * Social isolation - due to constant leakage and odor. * Skin irritation-due to constant leakage of urine. Urine tract infections - VVF increases the risk of developing urinary tract infections. BY ADDRESSING THESE KEY POINTS WE CAN WORK TOWARDS PREVENTING VVF IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF WOMEN AND GIRLS WORLDWIDE.
