The first case was identified on February 21, 2025, involving a 30-year-old man who recently traveled to Kampala, Uganda. He was diagnosed with the Clade I mpox virus, which is currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, and has been seen in travelers returning to various countries. The other two cases, involving a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, were discovered through contact tracing by health teams. Foster Mohale, a spokesperson for the department, stated that these are the first confirmed Mpox cases in South Africa this year, following the last reported case in September 2024. He reassured the public that there is no need for panic but advised caution regarding the virus's spread. Symptoms of Mpox include a rash lasting two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen glands. Although the disease is generally mild and self-limiting, anyone can contract it. The Department of Health encourages anyone experiencing symptoms, regardless of recent travel or contact history, to seek medical care. They also noted that the country has limited supplies of Mpox-specific vaccines for severe cases. To help prevent further spread, the department recommends practicing safer sex and maintaining good personal hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially before meals and after using the restroom. -IOL
