In a separate case, a 36-year-old man in Mutare has received an effective 18-year sentence for raping his ex-girlfriend. Case 1: Plumtree In the Plumtree Regional Magistrates’ Court, the first man was sentenced for a crime committed on January 22, 2021. He ambushed his 28-year-old ex-wife while she was walking home with friends. He chased her companions away and forced her into a nearby bushy area. There, he threatened her with a knife, ordered her to undress, and raped her without protection. After the assault, he attempted to take her to his home to smuggle her to South Africa against her will. However, he learned that her family was searching for her. He borrowed a bicycle and took her back to her family home. The victim reported the incident to the police, leading to his arrest. Case 2: Mutare In the second case, the Mutare Magistrates’ Court sentenced a 36-year-old man to 20 years in prison, with 2 years suspended for 5 years, for raping his ex-girlfriend in Dangamvura. The two were in a relationship from October 2023 to April 2024, but she ended it due to his violent behaviour. After their breakup, he continued to force himself on her, leading her to seek a protection order, which was granted on January 2, 2025. Just hours after being served with the order, on January 3, 2025, he stormed her home, dragged her to a disused house, locked the door with barbed wire, and raped her. The victim managed to escape while he was sleeping and reported the crime. ------ *Increased Sex Work Activity In Bulawayo’s CBD Unsettles Residents* (Pindula) Residents of Ward 1 in Bulawayo’s Central Business District (CBD) are voicing concerns over the growing presence of sex workers between 8th and 9th Avenue and along Lobengula Street. As dusk falls, the area, usually home to citizens working hard during the day, transforms into a hub of open solicitation. This has led to feelings of insecurity among CBD residents, especially at night. The sex workers are reportedly using explicit language and dressing provocatively, which some residents believe negatively impacts young people. There is concern that exposure to such behaviour might influence children, leading them to adopt inappropriate language or normalise certain behaviours, potentially affecting their social development. Speaking to CITE Youth Hub, a Ward 1 resident named MaMpofu said that as a mother, it is heartbreaking to see sex workers lingering in her community. She said: As a mother, it’s heartbreaking to see sex workers lingering around our residential area, exposing my children to a world they’re not ready for. It’s not just about morality; it’s about safeguarding their innocence and ensuring they grow up in a safe and healthy environment. MaMpofu also said that some local lodges have become hotspots for sex work, which is damaging the reputation of the community. A college student living in a CBD flat expressed similar concerns, saying they feel unsafe after 6 p.m. because people often mistake them for a sex worker. Residents are also worried about the young age of some sex workers, fearing this could lead to a rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in the community. ....... *Chitungwiza Pastor Allegedly Rapes Girl (14) And Gives Her Morning After Pills* (Pindula) A 36-year-old self-styled prophet is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl who is a member of his church, the Tabernacle of Power Ministries in Chitungwiza. According to HeraldOnline, Prophet Tino, whose real name is Tendai Tinodiwanashe Mashongashika, recently appeared in court to respond to the allegations. The incident reportedly happened on January 12, 2025, after a church service held at Pastor Tino’s home in Unit A. After the service, the youth chair lady asked the girl to stay behind and help arrange the chairs. During this time, Pastor Tino allegedly took the girl into his bedroom, where he forced himself on her and raped her. Afterward, he gave her a cloth to wipe off the blood and took her to her grandmother’s house. Before leaving, he prayed for her. The girl did not initially tell anyone about the assault because Pastor Tino had told her not to. He allegedly said that no one would believe her because he is a pastor. The next morning, on January 13, at around 6 AM, Pastor Tino met the girl again and gave her morning-after pills, instructing her on how to use them. The rape was discovered on January 30 when the girl’s grandmother checked her cell phone and found WhatsApp messages from the pastor proposing love to the 14-year-old girl. The grandmother also saw that the girl had been enquiring about morning-after pills and how to terminate a pregnancy. When she confronted her granddaughter, the girl did not disclose the rape. However, the grandmother informed her aunt, and the teenager then revealed the abuse by Pastor Tino. A medical report was presented in court as evidence. .... *Woman bashed for partying without hubby's permission* (the chronicle) A 35-year-old man from Entumbane suburb has been ordered to pay a US$300 fine after physically assaulting his wife for attending a party without informing him and later refusing to let him check her cellphone. Bhekisani Maphosa pleaded guilty to physical abuse charges before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Learnear Khumalo, who sentenced him to 10 months in prison. However, six months were suspended for five years, on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period. The remaining four months were suspended on condition that he pays the fine by March 30. According to prosecutor Ms Mandrela Chisiiwa, the incident occurred on February 5 at the couple’s home in Entumbane. "It was around 3 PM when Maphosa confronted his wife, Ms Shamiso George, about a party she had attended the previous day in Lobengula," said Ms Chisiiwa. An argument broke out after Maphosa demanded to check his wife's cellphone, suspecting infidelity. When she refused, he punched her and used a leather belt to beat her all over her body. The court heard that Ms George did not seek medical attention, as her injuries were not serious. In a separate but similar case, Charles Gumbo (30) of Pumula South suburb was sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting his 33-year-old girlfriend Ms Portia Mutakiwa over suspected infidelity. Gumbo was convicted by Ms Khumalo, with six months of his sentence suspended for five years on good behavior. Prosecutor Ms Chisiiwa told the court that Gumbo confronted Ms Mutakiwa over allegations of unfaithfulness. "The two had a misunderstanding which escalated, leading to Gumbo assaulting Ms Mutakiwa with a whip and a knobkerrie," said Ms Chisiiwa. The victim did not seek medical attention following the assault. Both cases highlight growing concerns over domestic violence in Bulawayo, with courts taking a firm stance against gender-based violence. Source - the chronicle ------ *Woman hires bouncers to beat up his husband* (H-Metro) A disturbing incident involving allegations of marital infidelity and domestic abuse was brought to the attention of the Harare Civil Court when Kenias Zimbwa revealed he was attacked by two bouncers hired by his wife, Chipiwa Taruona, after discovering used condoms in their bedroom on his birthday. Kenias testified that upon returning home to celebrate his birthday, he was confronted with a shocking discovery – used condoms under his bed. When he confronted his wife, Chipiwa, the situation quickly escalated into violence. "I came home on my birthday to find used condoms under my bed, and when I confronted her, she hired bouncers to attack me," Kenias told the court. He claimed that one of the bouncers was her brother, who is a soldier. According to Kenias, the bouncers physically assaulted him, leaving him with bruises. In an additional humiliation, they reportedly threw him out of the house while he was naked. In his testimony, Kenias also detailed past incidents of abuse at the hands of his wife, revealing that Chipiwa once attacked him with a screwdriver, stabbing him four times. He described his marital life as increasingly abusive, stating that his wife had starved him of intimacy for months, and he was subjected to neglect. "She does not cook for me, and I am forced to sleep without a blanket or even on the floor," he added. Kenias expressed his fear for his safety, claiming that he was scared his wife might eventually kill him. He asked the court to protect him from further harm. In response, Chipiwa denied the accusations of infidelity but admitted to hiring the bouncers to attack her husband. "My husband has been sexually abusing me for years," Chipiwa claimed. "I hired people to attack him." She did not provide specific details of the allegations of sexual abuse, but the marital dispute was clearly deeply contentious. Magistrate Meenal Naratom granted Chipiwa Taruona a protection order against Kenias, advising him to apply for his own protection order. The case highlights severe issues of domestic violence and marital conflict, with both parties alleging abuse. The court's decision to grant a protection order indicates a recognition of the seriousness of the allegations and the need to ensure safety for both parties. The confrontation between the teacher and the student's mother took place after Jongwe reportedly took the student for shopping before heading to his house. The student's mother, speaking to H-Metro, claimed that Jongwe had been sexually harassing her daughter and making inappropriate comments towards her. "Jongwe is unprofessional and has been harassing my daughter with love comments," she alleged. She further stated that she refused to sign a document authorizing her daughter to go on a trip, but Jongwe allegedly took her shopping despite not being part of the trip. "When I took the matter to the principal, he defended Jongwe, which angered me even more," she added. Responding to the accusations, Jongwe confirmed the heated confrontation with the student's mother but denied any wrongdoing. "Yes, the parent came here fuming about her daughter," Jongwe admitted.
