Remember the island-wide outage on Feb 9, 2025?
⭕️ Beyond the economic losses from the 6+ hour outage, the CEB incurred an additional 4 billion LKR (4,000 million) in the following days to supply electricity using diesel power plants due to Norochcholai being out.
⭕ Sri Lanka's 🇱🇰 annual electricity demand is ~16 billion kWh (8 billion kWh/six months). This 4 billion LKR extra cost results in an increase of 50 cents per unit (4 billion LKR / 8 billion kWh).
⭕ In simpler terms, if you consume 100 units per month, your electricity bill will increase by Rs. 50 in the June/July tariff revision—solely due to this outage.
