The world is full of distractions, and we are drowning in the sea of information. To survive and maintain our sanity, we must ask some questions. My friend from school days is posing in front of Burj Khalifa, what do I have to do with it? Another one is smiling by the side of his family, does that concern me? One of the politicians switched allegiance to another party, is it going to make a difference in my life? All those things don’t concern me, and at the same time, they are chipping away my precious time and energy, blurring my focus, and diverting my attention from what is important and valuable. We focus mostly on the stuff which goes all around us, our circle of concern and beyond, at the cost of what we can do and what we can improve, ignoring the circles of control and influence. We can derive one beautiful principle for our life from the sayings of the Prophet SAW, that can serve as a touchstone for deciding upon what to give our attention to “From the beauty of one’s faith is his leaving that which does not concern him.” (Tirmidhi: 2318) Before paying attention to something or someone, do ask, “What do I have to do with this?” Muhammad Yahya Noori
