While intelligence, academic brilliance, and exceptional memory are valuable assets for a student of knowledge, humility (Tawāḍu’) is far more crucial for achieving true progress and success. A humble student acknowledges his limitations, remains open to learning and correction, and actively seeks self-improvement. This openness cultivates a respectful and positive learning environment that fosters productive dialogue and the exchange of ideas. In contrast, arrogance obstructs intellectual growth. It blinds the student to his shortcomings and lead to arrogance and an unwillingness to accept correction or alternative perspectives. This ultimately leads to stagnation, self-delusion, and a lack of genuine wisdom. Arrogance breeds a rigid mindset, preventing the student from benefiting from the insights and experiences of others. In this context, the great Tābiʿī, Mujāhid, aptly stated: لا يتعلم العلم مستحي ولا مستكبر. (صحيح البخاري – 1 / 290) “Knowledge is not acquired by one who is shy or arrogant.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 1/290) A humble student constantly seeks self-improvement and learns from every opportunity, ultimately surpassing those who rely solely on their intellect. Humility enables one to benefit from all sources of knowledge, regardless of the teacher’s status or background, embodying the prophetic tradition of seeking wisdom wherever it may be found. Islamic history is replete with examples of great scholars celebrated more for their humility and noble character than for sheer intellectual prowess. These luminaries attributed their success and profound understanding to their humility before Allāh and their respect for their teachers. Their humility attracted divine blessings (barakah) in their knowledge and influence, rendering their works timeless and their legacy enduring. By embracing humility, a student not only gains knowledge but also earns the respect and admiration of peers and mentors alike. It is this humility that refines character, enhances understanding, and ultimately leads to true scholarly excellence.
