*Court Grants N50 Million Bail to Ex-Abia Governor Theodore Orji in Alleged N34 Billion Fraud Case*
A High Court in Abia State has granted bail to former Governor Theodore Orji in the sum of N50 million following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged misappropriation of N34 billion.
The court also ordered the seizure of his international passport to ensure compliance with bail conditions.
Orji, who served as Abia State governor from 2007 to 2015 and later as a senator, faces a 16-count charge alongside four others, including his son, Chinedum Orji.
The EFCC accuses them of misappropriating funds allocated for security votes, loans, and Paris Club refunds, among other allegations. The defendants pleaded not guilty during the proceedings.
The defense team filed bail applications, which were not opposed by the prosecution. Justice Lilian Abai granted bail and adjourned the trial to June 18 and 19, 2025.
This case marks a significant step in addressing corruption allegations tied to public office holders in Nigeria.
