It is quite impossible to cure depression for other people, but we can make a big difference by offering patience, understanding, and support. Just being there consistently and compassionately can make them feel less alone and help them through MDD. When being there, we should:
1. Learn about MDD, its symptoms, and treatment options, understanding that depression is a medical condition, not just sadness.
2. Allow your friend to express their feelings without interrupting or offering solutions.
3. Consistently check up on them because depression can cause isolation.
4. Help them with daily task as depression can cause them to be overwhelmed with daily activities.
5. Be patient, avoid giving advice, and pressuring them.
6. Engage in small activities like short walk, watching movie, listening to music together.
7. Watch out for signs and symptoms in them.
8. Respect their boundaries
9. Be consistent and celebrate small victories and successes.
While supporting our friends through MDD, we must take care of ourselves to avoid being drawn into depression ourselves because supporting someone can be emotionally exhausting if not managed well.
